Like many of you, I love decorating for Christmas. There is something about the holiday season that is truly magical.
From the twinkling lights on the Christmas trees to the collection of cherished Christmas ornaments that you unwrap each year, it’s something to look forward to.
I’ve received a few questions about how to decorate a coffee table in a small living room so today I’m sharing a few Christmas decorating tips that you may find helpful.
These tips are not just for Christmas. You can definitely implement them for any season.
Christmas Coffee Table Decor
While decorating my living room for a Christmas home tour, I was brainstorming how to decorate the coffee table without obstructing the view to the television.
This is the only place we have to watch our favorite Christmas movies like Elf and The Grinch, so I wanted to keep it simple.
One of the most popular ways to decorate your coffee table is to add floral arrangements.
This is a simple decorating idea, but we have two crazy cats that seem to eat anything that resemble flowers!
So I chose to shop my home and put together a pretty vignette of holiday decor following the rule of thirds.
What Is The Rule of Thirds?
You may have heard me talk about the rule of thirds in prior articles. It is something I learned years ago when I took a design class.
Basically, the human eye prefers groupings of three or other odd numbers. It creates balance and symmetry.
This concept applies to any type of home decor from mantels to tablescapes, even furniture placement.
How to Style a Coffee Table With The Rule of Thirds
A coffee table is the perfect place to experiment with this rule because it’s a smaller space.
Start by arranging items in a series of 3, 5 or 7 depending upon the size of your table.
Be sure to add lots of texture, including pieces with different heights and shapes to add dimension and interest.
You can see how I used a white mohair rug to anchor the holiday decor and add tons of texture. A table runner would work the same way.
Don’t get tied down with the individual number, but rather think in groupings.
For example, the sleigh is considered the 2nd element with the deer being the 3rd.
A simple way to implement the rule of thirds is to decorate with 3 of the same items in varying heights.
A trio of vases or candle holders is perfect for this. Add height by including books.
Play with the arrangement until you are happy with the placement.
Decorate With Trays
Another simple tip is to use a coffee table tray to anchor the decorative items on your table.
In the photo below, I’ve decorated for different seasons using rectangle trays.
When you take the tray away and just place the decor on the table, it looks flat and quite frankly, boring.
Go ahead and try it and see what I mean. 🙂
Create a focal point with table centerpieces and consider adding natural elements like plants, pine cones, or other seasonal elements as shown in this dough bowl centerpiece.
If you take one thing away from this article, it’s this-have fun with decorating. Start with a clean slate, mix and match.
Step outside of the box and use items you might not normally consider for your coffee table decor.
For example, the mohair rug I used for my Christmas coffee table is a bit unexpected, but it works.
The great thing about this centerpiece is after Christmas I can keep the faux fur for winter and just replace the sleigh and deer centerpiece with winter decorations.
