Gallery wall going up staircase

Gallery walls continue to be very popular. I’ve seen some really creative ideas in home magazines and online.

For whatever reason, I’m a little intimidated to create one in my main living area.

But I did create a family gallery wall going up the staircase. I learned a few things along the way and thought I’d share some of those tips and tricks with you.

Family Gallery Wall Tips and Tricks

  • The first step is to determine where you would like your gallery wall. You don’t need a large space. Smaller walls, like over an entry way table or bed, have great impact.

  • Next, gather things that mean something to you. It doesn’t have to be just art work. If you have any collectibles that you want to display or items from a family member, those can be showcased. Some of the prettiest gallery walls have a mix of old and new among art work. Don’t forget to frame your child’s most precious art work. As a Mom of two grown kids, these are some of my most prized possessions!

  • Decide on a theme or go with no theme at all for a more bohemian look! If you like a more streamlined look then you want to go with a similar frame style and color scheme. However, you can totally mix it up and use all different styles for a fun, flea market look.

  • The best tip I have is to lay out all your frames and items on the floor first, so you get a visual of what the gallery wall will look like. I’ve also seen some bloggers recommend cutting out paper in the size and shape of the frame and taping that up first so you can see how it will all fit. That way you are not hammering nails in the wrong spots!

  • Having the right picture hangers are so important. I love command strips, but a big mistake I made was hanging something that was way too heavy with command strips. Needless to say that didn’t last! Use a level to make sure pictures are straight. With a gallery wall, it can look messy if something is even a little off.

  • Mix things up seasonally or during the Holidays. An inexpensive way to do this is with free printables. Just search “free fall printables”, for example, and see what comes up. You’ll be amazed at the free printables that are offered. You can even create your own with programs like PicMonkey.

  • Transfer your photos to canvas for greater impact. My daughter just celebrated her 21st birthday and is moving into her first apartment. She has a photo of her with her brother that she loves. It was taken at Christmas and is nothing formal, but sometimes those are the best photos. I wanted to surprise her with a canvas of this to hang in her apartment. I was thrilled to receive a canvas from Simple Canvas Prints

This is the photo I started with:

This is the photo transferred to canvas. I went with an 8 x 10:

As you can see in the first photo, it was not a good quality photo. It was just taken with a camera phone, no edits or anything.

But what a difference with the canvas from Simple Canvas.  I love how the image goes around the entire side of the canvas.

It just gives it such a finished look. This was so easy to create as you are able to upload images directly from your phone, desktop or social media!

Also, the prices and quality are amazing. But if for some reason you are not happy with your order, they offer 100% “love it” guarantee. Check out Simple Canvas here

Of course I had to snap a photo of my daughter opening this up:

She was so happy and I know it will look great in her apartment. Nothing like family photos to make the transition easier!

You covered some great tips. I have also given out the tips about cutting paper to size and taping in place before hammering nails and the tip about the Command strips coming off the wall with heavy items. I know your daughter will treasure that canvas print for a long time. #HomeMattersParty
