For those of you new to Our Crafty Mom, my Dad loves to find pieces for me to upcycle-usually on the side of the road. He has found some incredible pieces. A few weeks ago I asked him if he could keep an eye out for an old chicken feeder as I really wanted to make a centerpiece for my dining room table. Sure enough he showed up the next week with this one that was actually in his shed!

I didn’t care that the inside was rusty as it was going to be covered anyway. All I cared about was that it was a solid piece with no holes, so I could float flowers in it.  The rust on the outside added to its appeal.  Also, the size was perfect for my large dining table. All I did was give it a good cleaning and then tested it with water to make sure there were no tiny holes that I missed. I didn’t want to damage my wood table. The hardest part was deciding what I wanted to fill this with.

As I have a large hydrangea bush in full bloom in my yard, I decided to fill it with beautiful hydrangeas in varying shades. Aren’t they the prettiest colors?

I love how the soft hydrangea looks against the rusty metal. So far the blooms haven’t wilted and it has been 4 days! The best part is this entire centerpiece didn’t cost me a penny!

Fall is absolutely my favorite time of the year for decorating and I cannot wait to fill this with mums, pumpkins and gourds! Don’t even get me started on my Christmas ideas! Let’s just enjoy Summer a little bit longer.

While I really wouldn't put anything 'rusty' on my table, you did give me an idea and I wonder if you couldn't use a section of roof gutter in the same way. you would simply need to close the sides well to hold any water.

You are so right Ticia. I ended up putting a runner under the chicken feeder to protect the table. I love your idea of using a roof gutter! You could even hang it outside to use seasonal flowers. Thanks for the great idea!
