During my recent visit to NH I found some great deals at a local Thrift Store. One such deal was this old cane bench for $5! I know a lot of readers don’t like to paint old pieces, but I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise as it was not my style. But it was a good solid piece. Here is the before:
Archives for July 2014
While I was visiting New Hampshire with my youngest for College Orientation, I had a chance to browse some really great Thrift Stores. I had some great finds. One was a cigar box for $1!! These can be used for so many things. I will probably use it to store little craft supplies, buttons and baker’s twine. Of course, I had to pretty it up, which is so fun! I wanted a very shabby chic look. I didn’t take a before pic, but it was a standard cigar box in pretty good shape. I covered it in this beautiful script shelf liner that I found at Bed Bath & Beyond (on clearance of course). I then added ribbons & lace to each side, as well as some paper roses that I made out of heavy cardstock. I used a chunky glitter for the tops of the flowers. I found cool metal “legs” by Tim Holz at Michael’s. I did finish the inside as well with the same paper. It makes me smile when I look at it!
Anyone who knows me knows I love burlap- as you can see in many prior posts! I have used burlap to make curtains, table runners, place mats, wreaths, etc. When I spotted a set of 3 burlap canvases for 75% off I did a little happy dance 🙂 I had a Porch Rules stencil, but didn’t want to make it a Porch Rules sign as the person I plan to give it to doesn’t have a porch, but she does have a great breezeway so this saying is perfect! All I did was use a sharpie paint pen, easy peasy!
I also found this cute little lamp on clearance, but wanted to add a little something to the shade. I made rolled flowers out of some old drop cloth that I had. Amazing how something so simple can really update a piece.
I love browsing Thrift Stores & finding a “diamond in the rough”-finding things that have basically been discarded & knowing I can give it a new life. Thrifting is definitely hit or miss & I was lucky enough to find some great pieces the other day. I found this:
I am working on items for an artisan event and continue to make items for a baby’s room. I think it’s always fun to put unique, handmade items in a baby’s room-at least until they are big enough to pull it down! I saw some cool mobiles on Pinterest & thought I’d make a blue & a pink. I finished the pink & think it is so sweet! It was not difficult to make, but very time consuming. In fact, my hands were hurting from tying all the knots, but as always, the satisfaction from seeing the final project is so rewarding. I used the Stampin’ Up! Big Shot Butterfly Die as well as SU bakers twine. I had an old circle form (knew I was saving it for something) & tied ribbon & tulle around it. I added rhinestones to the butterfly’s for some sparkle! I tied tulle together for easy hanging. Hopefully this will make some new Mom happy 🙂
I learned how to finger knit from watching a youtube video I stumbled upon on Pinterest. I made a few scarves and found it very relaxing. I knit while watching my shows & it keeps me from snacking, lol! I bought the softest yarn on sale at Michael’s a while back and decided to make a baby wreath as the colors were the sweetest baby blue, now mind you I have grown children who better not be having babies anytime soon so I have no idea where it is going but I am sure it will find a special home. I wrapped a grapevine wreath in a camel color yarn just to cover it then used two skeins of yarn finger knitted to cover the wreath. I did double knit as I love the extra fullness! I made a few pompoms for the side & added a sweet dreams banner using Stampin’ Up! paper & big shot dies. Happy 4th! Off to a cookout now a cookin due to the crazy weather!
Thank you for visiting Our Crafty Mom. Have a great day!
