For my project, I took a $1 white laundry basket and updated it with burlap and paint.

Here is what I started with:

My plan is to use it to hold extra throw pillows and throws in the living room.

I will admit to having a slight obsession with throw pillows.

They are fun and inexpensive to DIY and I love to change out the pillows on my sofa seasonally.

A couple of my favorite DIY pillows are these farmhouse stenciled pillows and this deer pompom pillow.

But when we sit down to watch a movie we end up just placing the pillows on the floor in front of the sofa.

So I thought a basket would be perfect to store the pillows we remove.

It can easily hold 2-3 good size pillows. The basket is also great to hold extra throws, which we always seem to have also.

Let’s get to the easy tutorial.

Supplies

Step 1.

Place the burlap inside the basket and cut to size.

Step 2.

Hot glue the burlap around the top lip of the laundry basket.

Be careful not to burn your fingers. These finger protectors are a huge help!

Step 3.

Start painting the basket with chalkboard paint. You will need a good 2-3 coats.

Step 4.

Once the chalkboard paint has dried, add a coat of silver metallic paint.

Step 5.

Go back around the basket and touch up any spots. With this farmhouse look, you don’t want it to be completely solid. It should have more of a metal look.

I have a metal tobacco basket and was looking to achieve that kind of look. Here is the metal basket:

Not bad for $1, right? I’m really happy with how it turned out.

I am going to make this. I just love it however, I have ordered burlap bags from Amazon. I get four for 19 dollars. They may be to big however I can cut them down and it will be less expensive to make.

This is so cool. It really looks like metal. Metallic paints have come a long way. Nice job!
