You know the inexpensive chipboard and paper mache signs you see at all the craft stores?

Well today I am going to show you how to give either chipboard or paper mache a faux galvanized metal look!

Supplies

Paint the entire family piece with black acrylic paint.

Then cover the piece sparingly with the silver paint.

This is just an initial coat and you want to still see the black underneath.

Once that dries, cover the entire piece in a thin coat of silver.

You don’t want it to be too thick, otherwise it will look just like silver metallic.

Try to let some of the black show. You can also sand areas down if you like.

Now to really make it look like galvanized metal, add some small nails or brads.

I really think this adds to the metal look.

I wanted to give the sign some dimension and not just hang it on the wall.

It will be used in a gallery wall in my master bedroom makeover.

The plan is to have this sign in the top center and then place family photos underneath.

I haven’t gotten that far yet, but as soon as the gallery wall is complete I will share an updated photo.

I had a scrap piece of wood, I think from an old shelf, that was the perfect size for this sign.

But when I placed it against the white, it just looked lost, so I came up with Plan B.

I had leftover faux wood wall paper from this post .

Just for the heck of it I held the sign up to the wall paper and it was a “tada” moment!

I just loved how the wall paper made the “galvanized metal” stand out.

I attached the wall paper to the wood with Mod Podge, my old stand by.

I use this stuff so often I should buy stock! Isn’t that wall paper gorgeous?

It has hints of silver blue that just stands out with this sign. Look at the difference:

One of the many things I love about crafting is there are no mistakes.

I totally had planned to just attach the family sign onto the plain white wood.

Sometimes you have to just go with it and it can end up being better than what you had planned.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had epic craft fails.

But I’ve learned that most things can be fixed.

Wouldn’t it be great if life was that easy, lol?

You can see the hutch is the original project I made over using the wall paper.

I wanted to show you the color of the walls in the master bedroom.

It is a warm coffee color that was here when I moved in and I just love it.

I usually paint everything white or blue so it is nice to have a different shade of paint!

The walls pick up the hints of beige in the wall paper.

I’m excited to get the entire gallery wall done and hope you will come back to see the full master bedroom makeover on November 16th!
