Sharing is caring!

Update an inexpensive plastic storage cart with paint for a quick and easy makeover. Take this storage piece from boring to wow!

You know those inexpensive plastic storage carts that you can find at most home and craft stores?

They are not very pretty, but you can pretty them up with paint!

Go gold for a little bling.

Plastic Storage Cart

Today I’m teaming up with a group of creative bloggers for a fun upcycle challenge blog hop.

You all know I love to repurpose and upcycle.

The challenge is to upcycle anything glass, plastic or metal. Fun right?

Upcycle Challenge

This came at a perfect time, as I am working on my craft room and looking for inexpensive storage ideas.

You can see my plans for the craft room that I’m updating in the $100 Room Challenge here.

I hit up my favorite thrift store and saw this:

Sorry for the blurry picture. It’s not very pretty, but I loved that it had 7 drawers that I could totally fill with tons of craft supplies.

I loved it even more when I saw the price:

I scooped that baby up as soon as I could and knew right away this was going to be my upcycle challenge.

Let me show you the paint I used, in case you want to makeover your own plastic cart.

Of course, you can use any color paint you like, but I do think the gold really pops!

Supplies

Instructions

Start be removing all the drawers.

Give a light sanding to the plastic cart that you are painting and be sure to remove any dirt, etc.

first coat of gold paint

If you are able to spray paint the plastic cart, that would be faster, but that was not an option.

It is about 10 degrees here and even the basement is too cold to use spray paint.

This took longer, but does have a smooth finish when it is done.

This is after three coats:

Once you have the entire cart painted, you can add the drawers back.

To step it up a notch, I used really cool cabinet pulls on the drawers.

Little details like this really make it look so much better:

I can’t wait to get my stuff in these drawers!

I’ll share an updated photo of it in the finished craft room at the end of the month.

Another way to update plastic storage is to give them a faux metal look like I shared here using Dollar Store plastic bins.

What a difference paint makes!
