How to Make

Tin Can Planters

Title 2

I’m always looking for ways to recycle things and use them in a new way. So when I saw these tin can planters, I knew I had to make some. They are so fun to make!

SUPPLIES FOR ALUMINUM CAN PLANTER

–Empty Tin Cans – Download Free Printable linked below, or use napkins – Mod Podge  – Moss – White Chalk Paint – Pink Paint – Foam Brush – Hammer  – Can Opener

STEP 1. PREPARE THE EMPTY CANS

Gather your tin cans and remove the labels. Give them a good wash to remove any leftover food.

STEP 2. REMOVE THE TOP AND BOTTOM LIDS

Use a standard can opener to remove both the top and the bottom can lids.

STEP 3. CRUSH THE BOTTOM OF THE CAN

Place the tin can on its side so the seam is up. Then you can use your hand to flatten the can.

STEP 4. HAMMER THE BOTTOM OF THE CAN

Use a hammer or mallet to seal the tin can.

STEP 5. PAINT THE CRUSHED CANS

Gather your favorite paint to paint the tin cans. I used pretty spring colors in pink and sage green, plus white chalk paint.

You will need 2-3 coats for full coverage. Let dry.

STEP 6. BRUSH MOD PODGE ON CAN

Place a layer of mod podge onto your crushed tin can. I use foam brushes for painting and adding mod podge.

STEP 7. ADD YOUR IMAGE

Place your napkin or other material onto the mod podge after about 30 seconds and smooth it out with your fingertips.

STEP 8. TEAR EXCESS PAPER

Tear the extra napkin or paper from the can and gently smooth down.

STEP 9. ADD A TOP COAT

You will need about 2-3 coats of mod podge on top of your tin cans. If they are going outside, spray with a clear sealer.

ENJOY YOUR BEAUTIFUL TIN CAN PLANTERS!

Glue a piece of twine or ribbon for hanging.  Get even more details in the blog post below.
