Show Your Patriotism With A Fun Red, White and Blue Wreath

Sharing is caring!

Let me show you how to make a unique red, white, and blue wreath made with Dollar Tree plastic tablecloths and a star wreath frame.

Not only is it a fun and creative project, but it’s also a beautiful way to greet friends and family by displaying this independence day wreath on your front door.

The good news is this patriotic wreath doesn’t have to be covered, as the plastic tablecloths are water resistant.

In this article, we’ll go over the materials needed, step-by-step instructions, and other tips for creating a stunning Fourth of July wreath.

Red, White and Blue Wreath

To create your wreath, you’ll need a few basic materials. Be sure to read to the bottom of this post as I have included a printable craft card to make it easy for you!

You can easily find these materials at your local Dollar Tree. If the colors are out of stock, check out Michaels, JoAnn Fabric and Crafts, or Hobby Lobby.

How to Make A Red White and Blue Wreath with Plastic Tablecloths

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram you may have seen the plastic tablecloth sunflower wreath I made last year.

It was very popular so the moment I spotted the star wire wreath form at Dollar Tree, I immediately knew it would be perfect for this same technique.

Craft Supplies Needed:

supplies for red white and blue wreath

While this is a patriotic wreath, you can use any colors you like to make a tablecloth wreaths. Use the round wreath form to celebrate any occasion.

Here are some examples:

  • Graduation Colors – celebrate with a wreath in school colors
  • Rainbow Wreath – create a bright and colorful wreath
  • Christmas Wreath – red and green tablecloths for the holidays
  • Baby Shower – create a baby shower wreath in pink or blue.
  • Winter – a white wreath would be great for Winter. Add a banner or a bit of sparkle to look like snow.
  • Valentine’s Day Wreath – make a plastic tablecloth wreath in red and white
  • St. Patrick’s Day – a green and white design would be perfect!
  • Easter – what about a pastel tablecloth wreath for Easter? That is on my list!

Did you notice I didn’t list a hot glue gun or any adhesive? The cool thing is no adhesive is required! You’ll see why in the next step.

Dollar Tree Plastic Tablecloth Red, White and Blue Wreath Tips

Remove the tablecloths from their packaging

For this type of wreath where there is a lot of repetition, it helps to set up the supplies so you can work in bulk.

When you take the tablecloths out of the package, do not unfold the tablecloth.

You want to keep it folded so you can make 3 single cuts across the entire tablecloth.

Measure the length of the folded tablecloth, divide by 3 and cut 3 cuts lengthwise as shown in the picture above.

That is why it’s important to have very sharp scissors. This is a big timesaver with this type of craft. Keep the colors separate as you continue to the next step.

Fold each color bunch in half and cut

Now it’s time to cut the long vertical pieces in half. Fold them in half and cut across where the halfway mark is.

Again, keep the colors separate as it will make it easier to make the wreath.

Cut both ends of each color pile in a v shape

Use your scissors to cut the ends of all the piles in a v shape on both sides. You may not be able to cut the full pile, so work in sections until you have them all cut.

This will give the edges a nice finish. Don’t worry about the cuts being perfect. As you can see, mine aren’t.

Once the wreath is put together you won’t even notice.

red white and blue scraps from tablecloths

You will have a big pile of scrap tablecloth pieces from cutting the ends-don’t throw these out. 🙂 I have a fun idea for these.

Begin securing the strips

I mentioned above that this wreath is not difficult, but it is time consuming.

The best way to get the fullness of the wreath is to tie individual pieces to the wire wreath form.

So the good news is no hot glue gun or any adhesive at all is needed. The downside is this is truly a “handmade” wreath. 🙂

My placement was 2 red, 2 white and 2 blue all the way around the wreath form.

I recommend starting at the outside and working your way in.

This is where you will want to settle in with a good show on, or put on a good album (my go-to is Stevie Nicks).

Pour yourself a beverage (perhaps a summer cocktail) or glass of tea and continue to tie, tie and tie again!

We are about half-way through at this point. But, you can see how it is starting to take shape.

Continue until the wreath is nice and full. Be sure to shake it like a tambourine and fluff it out with your fingers.

Voila…

A beautiful, full star-shaped wreath perfect for Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day or any patriotic themed summer barbecue.

You can hang this wreath on your front door, on a wall, or on a large frame or decorative arch as I show here.

Another way to display this wreath is on a tobacco basket, or other large basket.

The shape of the star really stands out against the large basket.

Adding Personal Touches

To make your wreath truly unique, consider adding personal touches such as family photos, monograms, or other decorations that reflect your personality and style.

You could also add other patriotic decorations such as miniature American flags or patriotic ribbons.

Hanging Your Wreath

Once your wreath is complete, it’s time to display it with pride.

Hang it on your front door, above your fireplace, or anywhere else that will showcase your creation.

You could also create multiple wreaths and give them as gifts to friends and family.

Remember the leftover scraps from the tablecloths? I used them as confetti in the jars and buckets on my tiered tray!

Wreath Alternatives

If wreaths aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other DIY patriotic decor ideas to choose from.

Consider creating a flag banner, or download my free patriotic USA banner HERE.

Create a patriotic sign like my DIY pallet wood wall sign. Make a festive centerpiece, or set a lovely patriotic tablescape.
