Turn a leftover gift wrap roll into the cutest heart shape paper craft. This recycled DIY is perfect for Valentine’s Day decor.
It’s also great for baby showers, parties, or simply adding a handmade touch to shelves, mantels, and walls.

Paper Heart Crafts
It’s time for our monthly Thrift Store Decor Team challenge. This is something I look forward to every month and I hope you do as well.
There are 9 of us participating this month, so be sure to read to the bottom of this post to check out all of the creative projects.

I’ve been having fun creating Valentine’s Day crafts and have a super thrifty (and cute) paper craft to share with you.
I had a bunch of empty wrapping paper tubes leftover from Christmas and knew I would use them for something.
Inspiration struck and I started crafting paper strip hearts to make a paper chain for my living room window.
This is the first year I am decorating a Valentine’s Day tree, so these will be perfect hanging on the window next to the tree. Please stop by tomorrow to see the fully decorated tree.
For even more heart crafts, be sure to check out my air dry clay hearts and my Valentine heart garland.
Supplies for Heart Shape Paper Craft
I’m all about crafts that are budget-friendly and require minimal supplies. This cute craft checks all the boxes!
- Empty Gift Wrap Roll – if you want color, you can use craft paper, leftover wrapping paper in solids, stripes or polka dots.
- Paper Cutter – you can also use scissors, but a paper cutter makes it so much easier.
- Twine – I used natural twine, but again you can go with colorful ribbon or baker’s twine.
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks – I love this cordless glue gun!
- Hole Punch – to attach twine or ribbon.

How to Make Paper Hearts
Step 1. Cut the Paper
To make the empty roll easier to work with, start by cutting the paper in 12″x12″ squares.

Step 2. Cut Paper Strips
Next, cut the paper in 1″ strips in width at the following lengths:
- 3 – 6″ strips
- 2 – 8″ strips
- 2 – 10″ strips
- 2 – 12″ strips

It helps to work in batches, so I cut the strips all at one time. One empty tube makes 9 large paper hearts. How is that for affordable?
Step 3. Glue and Fold the 6″ Strips
Gather the 3 6″ strips and hot glue them together at the bottom. You will keep one 6″ piece as the center of the heart.
Working on the outside of the center strip, fold the 2 remaining 6″ pieces into a heart shape and glue to the bottom of the strip.

Step 4. Fold the Remaining Strips
Continue to glue and fold the remaining pieces working off of the main base and folding outwards.

Your heart will end up having 4 layers. Continue this process until all the hearts are complete.
Look at how pretty they are:

You can stop here and use them to decorate gifts, or place in a bowl or other decorative accent. However, I chose to create a garland.
Step 5. Add Twine for Hanging
Use a hole punch at the top or bottom of the heart and secure with twine.

Create a banner style garland to decorate a mantel or book shelf, or go with a horizontal banner to hang in a window as shown below.

I’ll try to get a better picture tomorrow as it was a rainy, dreary day when I took this photo. I may add some bows to the top once I finish the tree.
