Making a flag with ribbon is a super simple craft project that is perfect for the 4th of July, Memorial Day, or all summer long.
The best part is all you need is some red, white, and blue ribbon, a glue gun, and a wooden dowel or stick to make one.
This project is perfect for kids or adults, and you can easily customize it to fit any space. Plus, it’s a great way to use up those leftover scraps of ribbon from other projects.

Here’s what you’ll need to make a flag with ribbon:
- Ribbon in red, white, and blue (you can use any width or type of ribbon)
- Piece of jute rope – 24″
- A glue gun
- A wooden dowel or stick (I used a stick cut to 26″)
- Scissors
- Optional: star stickers or patriotic scarf with stars (I found a scarf at the dollar store)
How to Make a Flag
Step 1. Determine the size of your flag
First, decide how big you want your flag to be. I was thrilled to find a 50-piece package of red, white, and blue ribbon at the craft store. It was 60 percent off so I scored it for just $4!
Cut the ribbon into strips in the size you want. I went with 24″ pieces. This is the most time-consuming part.
Use the first piece of ribbon as a template and continue cutting. I used all 50 pieces. Once you cut the ribbon it is smooth sailing.
Step 2. Glue the ribbon to the jute rope
You’ll need about twice as many strips of a blue ribbon as you will of white and red. Next, glue the ribbon strips to the rope, spacing them evenly.
Because I wanted the stick to show, I decided to attach each ribbon piece to a thick piece of jute rope first.
This is totally a matter of preference. If you don’t care if the dowel or stick shows, you can certainly attach the ribbon directly to the dowel.
I like the added texture that the stick gives to the flag. It has a rustic farmhouse feel to it.
Alternate between red ribbons, blue ribbons, and white ribbons across the entire length of the jute.
Step 3. Secure larger strips of fabric
Once I took a step back and looked at the ribbon flag, I felt it was too sparse. I definitely wasn’t happy with all of the open space.
So I took a look around my craft stash and spotted a couple of dollar store patriotic scarves.
I simply ripped strips of the scarf about 2-3″ wide and attached them with glue along the back of the ribbon.
This really made a huge difference and all of the colors seem to pop now!
Step 4. Cut star fabric
Another last-minute addition was using the corner square of the scarf that was covered in stars. You could also use scarf fabric if you have it, or pick up star stickers.
I used fabric scissors to cut a square of the star material and hot glued it to the corner of my ribbon flag.
Fold it under about 1/4″ and run a bead of hot glue along the length so it has a finished look. I’m all about a good “no-sew” project!
Step 5. Attach jute rope to dowel or stick
Once you have secured all of your ribbons, it’s time to attach the jute rope to the stick.
I simply used a narrow red ribbon to attach the rope to the stick.
Step 6. Add twine for hanging
The last step is to add a twine hanger to the flag. Be sure to cut your dowel or stick about 1-2″ longer on each end so you have room for the twine.
Tie the end of the twine in place and trim any excess. Add a dab of hot glue for extra support.
Your flag is now ready to wave proudly on Independence Day!
