See how I turned a $5 marble slab, found at a barn sale, into a beautiful small kitchen island with gorgeous wood turned legs.
Hello and welcome to this month’s thrift store challenge. If you’ve visited here before, you all know how much I love thrift store shopping!
You never know what you will find, but you know you will see something unique that you will not find at a mall!
Several months ago I was exploring our new town and I saw a sign with two of my most favorite words “barn sale”!
The gentleman who owned the farm was the sweetest man, who proudly told me he was 88 years old and worked the farm everyday.
He said it was what kept him young! You don’t see that kind of work ethic much anymore.
This was the coolest barn sale I’ve ever been to. There were literally 8 barns on a gorgeous farm jam-packed with stuff. But the crazy thing was, it was organized.
One barn was filled with rows and rows of book shelves. One was a holiday barn, with just holiday stuff. But the one that made my heart go pitter-patter was the barn filled with shutters, old doors, counter tops and the like.
There was nothing in particular that I was looking for, but the second I saw this marble slab, I knew it needed to come home with me:
This table makeover was created in collaboration with Osborne Wood and contains affiliate links. However, all opinions and love for this product are 100% mine! Please see my full disclosure here.
When the gentleman told me with a smile it was $5 I wanted to hug him-ok I did hug him! It is solid marble you guys and had a finished edge that was perfect for a small kitchen island.
Some things are meant to be and the fact that I had a gorgeous set of table legs from Osborne Wood just confirmed that. Here is what I used to make this kitchen island.
Supplies For A Small Kitchen Island With A Marble Top
- English Country Dining Table Legs from Osborne Wood
- Marble Slab-found at barn sale
- Scrap wood cut to size
- Wood Glue
- Wood Screws
- DecoArt Color Stain Paint in Navy
My Dad helped me construct this kitchen island, as he has all the tools with a great set up in his yard. He cut a piece of scrap wood to fit under the apron of the marble, so the marble basically just slides over the wood.
The legs are screwed into the scrap wood.
The English country legs are just gorgeous and have brass feet that look so regal.
My kitchen is done in a navy and white color scheme, so I chose to use a pretty navy color stain for the island legs.
The stain is great because it still shows the detail in the wood and is not a solid color.
Here it is after one coat:
Two coats of color stain was all that was needed to really make the legs pop! The navy really compliments the marble top.
As our kitchen is small, the island is placed against the wall, but I can easily pull it out and utilize it for serving and meal prep.
If you are looking for quality wood products, I cannot say enough good things about Osborne Wood. They were founded in 1979, so they know a thing or two about the cabinet and furniture trade.
I had the pleasure of meeting a few of their representatives at a blogging conference last year.
I was so impressed, not only with the quality of their products, but also the pride they take in providing many avid hobbyists and Do-It-Yourselfers with unfinished wooden parts and furniture.

For those who have a small kitchen space even those who have room in their kitchen, this idea would be a great suggestion. I'm pleased to read this new design for the kitchen, thank you for this wonderful idea. I'd probably tell my friends because they're like having a hard time on what's the best shots and that's a great help for their kitchens.
