Turn Pine Cones into Adorable Gnome Ornaments

These DIY pine cone gnome ornaments are a creative and cost-effective way to spruce up your Christmas decor. Get the simple DIY tutorial.

My mind was spinning with ideas of how I could use them. The first thing I did was clean and preserve them.

I have a tutorial showing how to clean and preserve them here.

Then I started thinking about the holidays and have some really fun things planned.

I have three full baskets of pine cones, so I lucked out.

A small bag sells for about $5 at the craft store.

So if you have pine cones in your yard, scoop those up and get crafting!

Let me show you how easy these adorable gnomes are to make.

Supplies needed for pine cone gnomes

• Pine Cones – check your yard, neighbors yards, or parks
• White Paint
• Foam Brush
• Buffalo Check Fabric – I used a small tree skirt from Dollar Tree
• Pom-poms 
• Cordless Glue Gun
• Wood Beads 

Step 1. Paint the pine cones.

Use the foam brush to paint the pine cone with white paint.

You don’t have to paint the top portion, as that will be covered.

Let dry.  

You can use q-tips if you want to get into the little crevices of the pine cone.

But, I actually like how it looks with a little of the natural color showing. Let the pine cones dry.

Step 2. Measure the buffalo check fabric for the hat. 

Now you want to get the correct size for the hat.

The easiest way is to wrap the fabric around the pine cone and cut it.

I used a small tree skirt from the Dollar Tree. You can actually get 5 hats out of one skirt! 

Step 3. Hot glue the fabric. 

Use the hot glue gun to glue the fabric around the pine cone.

You can fold the edge over so it is not rough from cutting.

Step 4. Add the nose. 

Place the nose under the hat and secure with hot glue.

Step 5. Hang from a tree, or add to a package. 

Run an ornament hook through the top of the hat to hang these little gnomes to your Christmas tree.

You can also add several to a small table top tree for a themed gnome tree.

Kids would love this! 

They would also be adorable to attach to a gift with a little tag.

The recipient can hang it on their tree!
