Today is our monthly Create With Me challenge hosted by Samantha from Little Bits of Home.
This is such a fun challenge because at the start of each month, we ask YOU to vote on what material we should use in our next Create With Me Challenge.
Then we share our projects using the material you voted for!
This month you voted for picture frames. I have been wanting to make a lantern forever and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do so.
When I searched Pinterest for DIY Lanterns Using Picture Frames, there were so many options!
I always like to mix it up a little, so I added decorative trim to the top. I’ve always admired lanterns but was never willing to pay the steep cost for one.
I had NO idea you could make one from Dollar Store frames.
Here is the completed project:
Can you believe that was made for $6? I really am so happy with how it turned out and will definitely be making more.
Here is an easy tutorial:
Supplies for DIY Lantern From Dollar Store Frames
- 6-4 X 6 Frames
- Krylon Indoor/Outdoor Aerosol Paint, 12 oz, Aqua
- E6000 Craft Adhesive
- Duct Tape, White
Remove glass from all 6 frames and set aside.
Spray the frames a color of your choice. I used two coats of aqua letting it dry in between.
I did not spray the inside of the frames as I wanted a darker look on the inside to go with the knob I planned to use.
Next, replace the glass in the frames. Use E-6000 adhesive or wood glue to adhere the four frames together to create a box.
Use duct tape to secure it while it sets.
Finally, use adhesive to secure the center of the 4 X 6 frames and adhere to the base with adhesive.
I had some decorative trim left from my DIY Bar Cart that you can see here so I cut some to size and added it to the top of the lantern.
It really added to the finished project and made it a unique piece.
You can also add a knob as shown here.
It is totally up to you. I had one in my craft stash so chose to add it.
I love the contrast against the aqua.
This was so easy to make but I absolutely love it!
There are so many decorating possibilities with this DIY Lantern.
I can’t wait to decorate it for Fall, but for now I added sea shells for a fun Summer look.
The battery operated candles are so easy to use and come with a remote so I don’t have to take it out to turn it on and off.
You can find those on Amazon here candles with timer remote control.
Thanks so much for visiting!
