Today is not a typical post for me but I hope to introduce you to an idea that I think you will enjoy. With the Holidays right around the corner, I’ve been thinking about something unique to get my Dad. So when I received an offer from a memoir writer I knew this was the idea I had been waiting for! It is necessary to give you a little bit of background so you understand why this gift idea is so important to my family. My Dad is undergoing treatment for Cancer. He just completed radiation and we are hopeful that it was successful. He also just celebrated his 75th birthday so this is a big year!

It is normal when you are faced with a life threatening illness, or even as you get older to become more sentimental and think about what’s important in life. Obviously it always comes down to family. When all is said and done it doesn’t matter what kind of car you drive or how much money you have in your bank account, what matters is the legacy you leave behind. My Dad always gives us the most beautiful cards for our birthdays with a handwritten note that usually brings us to tears. My kids and I save every last one of them. He always says I love you at the end of every phone call and tells us how proud he is of us whenever he sees us. As I write this he is visiting his two brothers and my sister in Florida to celebrate his birthday. He went by himself and we are so happy for him. Here are a few photos I am including in my Dad’s memoir:
US Air Force Photo 1962
Certificate of Completion US Air Force Security School 1962
Letter to his parents from his US Air Force Commander 1962

Here is a post I shared with a Pallet Legacy Board I made for my Dad using pallet wood. It had pictures of his kids, grandkids and siblings. Already there are new additions to the family including a great granddaughter and a great granddaughter due any day now!
I love the idea of a children’s book and can imagine my niece reading to my great niece with pictures of her pre-school class mates and her favorite Dolly. How about a Cookbook of Memories including the families treasured recipes handed down from generation to generation? For our family we would include our great great grandmother’s recipe for French dressing, which is basically meat stuffing that we have on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
I hope you enjoyed this post A Father’s Legacy – Memoir Writer Gift Idea and will think outside the box this year for the Holidays. Seriously, how many shirts and ties does a person need?
