I’ll also share instructions with photos below. Let’s get to it!
Supplies for DIY Spell Book
You can get everything at Dollar Tree, with the exception of the gold wax.
- Large old book – mine was $3 from the thrift store. Dollar Tree also has a section of books
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks – this cordless one is my favorite!
- Black tissue paper
- Plastic reptiles
- Foam Brush
- Deco-Art Metallic Lustre
- Mod Podge
How to Make a Hocus Pocus Spell Book
Start by brushing a layer of mod podge on the front of the book.
Roll the tissue paper into a ball and get it nice and wrinkled. Add it to your book.
Normally with mod podge crafts you want to remove wrinkles. For this craft, you want the wrinkles.
Press the tissue paper onto the book with a plastic bag. This will help keep the tissue paper from tearing.
Next, add mod podge to the side of the book and press the rest of the tissue paper onto it.
Fold the tissue paper under the inside and trim any excess.
I found a bag of creepy reptiles at Dollar Tree and used the black ones to add that spooky factor to the spell book.
Simply hot glue bugs around the top of the book.
You can use your hot glue gun to add words. I included spells. It doesn’t look like much yet, but the next step takes it to the next level!
I also used a hot glue gun to create stitching. This was my first time using a hot glue gun to add writing and it’s a pretty cool technique.
Any Hocus Pocus spell book has to have a creepy eye. Add it to the middle side of the book with a bit of hot glue.
Get ready for all of the details to pop! Add gold wax to all the details of the book, including the words and bugs.
This is the same gold wax I used to create the viral busted canvas Halloween art.
Simply use your finger to rub the wax all over the book, especially the wrinkles in the tissue paper.
This really does make the Hocus Pocus book come to life.
Be sure to get it into the sides of the pages too.
That’s all there is to it! Now you have a gorgeous hocus pocus spell book inspired by the Halloween favorite Hocus Pocus movie.
All in, this cost about $6 to make. It looks like something you would find at a specialty Halloween store for much more than that.
What do you think? Is this something you could see yourself making?
