Gingerbread Christmas Tree Ornaments
If you follow me on Facebook you may have seen my gingerbread themed Christmas Tree. I’ve really been having fun decorating for the holidays with this theme.
My tree last year was a bit more formal with red and white Christmas decorations. This decorating style is a more informal and I’m really loving it.
The Dollar Tree gingerbread house I made inspired this theme. I have several more gingerbread themed projects in the works, so be sure to stop by to see those.
Now, let’s get to the supplies so you can get started with your own adorable gingerbread themed ornaments.
Supplies
- DecoArt Paint Raw Sienna – this is the perfect gingerbread color
- White Puffy Paint
- Mod Podge – I used a matte finish, but you can also use a gloss finish
- Glamour Dust
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Paper Towels
- Plastic Cups for Paint – dollar store plastic cups work great!
- Craft Sticks – for mixing
Step 1. Clean The Ornaments
To get the smoothest paint finish possible, it’s important to clean the ornaments with rubbing alcohol. You can just use a paper towel.
This will get rid of any fingerprints or dust.
Step 2. Mix The Paint With Mod Podge
To ensure that the paint isn’t too thick and to help it adhere to the glass, add a bit of mod podge to the paint.
Use a disposable cup and pour paint about 1/4 of the way full.
Then add a spoonful or two of mod podge. Mix it with a craft stick until it is well blended.
You can always add more. It takes very little paint to cover the ornaments. This is my favorite way to paint the inside of glass for crafts.
I’ve tried several different methods and this works best. The first time I tried this paint technique was on these painted mason jars.
I was surprised at how smooth the finish was and couldn’t wait to try it on ornaments.
Step 3. Pour Paint Mixture Into the Ornaments
Slowly pour your mixed paint into the ornament. It is best to start with a small amount.
Now you want to slowly rotate the ornament around so the paint moves across and covers the entire ornament.
If you don’t have enough paint, just pour a bit more.
Step 4. Let Dry Upside Down
Once you’ve covered the ornament with paint, place it upside down to dry. You will be surprised at how much paint comes out. You can place them on a skewer or in an empty egg carton.
Let them dry overnight. When I tell you the finish is perfectly smooth, I am not exaggerating.
Step 5. Decorate the Painted Ornaments
Now for the fun part…decorating the ornaments. Puffy paint makes it super easy. I kept it simple with a gingerbread face, a snowflake and a freehand design at the top of the ornament.
You can also search gingerbread house designs if you want to get more creative with your ornaments.
I’m a big fan of sparkle, so I added glamour dust. Add this while the puffy paint is still wet.
Step 6. Let Puffy Paint Dry
The hardest part is waiting, but it is important to let the puffy paint dry. They will take about 3-4 hours depending upon how thick the paint is.
Now, just add pretty ribbon and hang the sweet ornaments on your Christmas Tree.
The gingerbread color really pops against the stunning flocked tree from King of Christmas.
You can follow this same tutorial to paint clear plastic ball ornaments too, but I prefer the look of the glass ornaments.
