What Is Hygge?
Hygge is something that we have been hearing more and more of lately. If you are not familiar with it, the word Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is usually translated as “cosiness” and is a Danish way of living that focuses on a sense of comfort, togetherness, and well-being.
It’s about hunkering down in the winter, while creating a comforting and cozy place. It doesn’t matter if you live alone, or with family, everyone can enjoy this lifestyle with just a few simple tips.
I recently read the book The Little Book of Hygge: Danish Secrets to Happy Living and really enjoyed the concept and was inspired to incorporate some of these ideas into my home.
The Little Book of Hygge shares these ideas for bringing Hygge into your own life:
- Get comfy and take a break
- Be here now-no cell phones or computers
- Turn down the lights and bring out the candles
- Build relationships and spend time with your tribe
- Give yourself a break from the demands of healthy living-say yes to cake, which is most definitely Hygge
- Live life today, like there is no coffee tomorrow
How To Add Hygge To Your Bedroom
Now what brings Hygge to me, may not be the same for you. But hopefully these ideas will inspire you to incorporate elements of comfort into your home-whatever that may be.
Today I’m sharing simple things I did to incorporate a sense of comfort and coziness into my master bedroom. Living in New England we experience really cold winters and significant snow storms.
I am all about hunkering down in the house with a good book, a cup of hot cocoa and a snuggly blanket! Here are my tips:
-
Create A Hygge Reading Nook Or Corner
You don’t have to have a large space to create a reading nook in your bedroom. Even a small, comfy chair with an ottoman is a great way to incorporate Hygge into your bedroom.
There is nothing better than snuggling up with a good book on a comfy chair, with a luxurious blanket-which brings me to my next recommendation!
-
Add A Super Soft Throw
There are two things that I believe you can never have enough of in your home-throw pillows and blankets, specifically soft and comfy throws. I may have a slight addiction with both.
This has definitely been passed on to my daughter. She has a few different throws at the end of her bed and always has one with her when she is snuggling on the couch on a day off.
Here are a couple of my favorite throws-click the photo for the details:
-
Have The Right Lighting
There is nothing worse than a harsh or blinding light in a room. I’m all about table or floor lamps in a room, especially for task lighting. I love to use Edison Lightbulbs and fairy lights in a room.
They definitely up the cozy factor, especially at night. You can read about the DIY Hanging Light here.
-
Light A Favorite Candle
If I am home for more than two hours, there is a candle burning. Candles and essential oils can really help you to relax and set a warm and welcoming feeling in a room.
Lavender is one of my favorites to use. You may like the New Mommy Survival Kit I shared, which has DIY lavender linen spray and sugar scrub and the lemongrass soap I made here.
I’ll always have a seasonal candle burning, like Pumpkin Spice for fall, Cedar for the holidays and currently I’m burning caramel apple cake:
