DIY Modern FLAIR DINING ROOM BENCH

Welcome to September’s Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest™!  This month our sponsor is Spoonflower with a theme of Modern Flair!  This is my first time working with Spoonflower and I had so much fun picking out fabric. The selection is amazing with so many great prints and patterns to choose from. Do you know you can actually design your own print and turn it into fabric, wallpaper or gift wrap? This is something I plan to look into for the Holiday season.

Fab Furniture Flippin Contest September Spoonflower Our Crafty Mom

Today I am sharing my DIY dining room bench. The fabric I chose is perfect for the project I had in mind, as well as the theme of Modern Flair. My dining room is very narrow and I have a large dining table. This makes it a little difficult to move around, especially during the Holidays when company is over. For quite some time, I have been wanting to build a dining room bench for one side of the table for additional seating. The plan is to store the bench under the table when not in use, creating more room to move around. This bench really came together in no time. The original plan was to pick up 4 wooden legs at the Hardware store, or  have a 4×4 cut down, however, when I was at the thrift store I found this chair:

Now, the last thing I need is another chair, however, this baby was 50% off! For $3 I could get 4 beautiful spindle legs that would be perfect for my dining room bench. I will repurpose the top half for something down the road, as you never know when you will need half a chair 🙂

SUPPLIES

4 chair legs

3′ pine board for the seat.

wood screws

drill

2″ foam

staple gun

1 yard fabric

HOW TO BUILD A DINING ROOM BENCH

Paint the legs the color of your choice. While I wanted it to blend nicely with the dining room table, which has a weathered gray finish, I also wanted a modern flair for this bench. Therefore, I went with a gray base and used my favorite metallic silver paint to bump it up a notch. I have used this combination several times and just love it!

Next, use a staple gun to attach the fabric over the foam and 3′ board making sure it’s pulled taut and even. The legs were attached with wood screws. The great thing about repurposing is- not only the pride in the finished product- but also the amount of money you can save. I could never buy this bench for what it cost me to build it.

This dining room bench fits perfectly under my table, which makes it so much easier to move around the narrow dining room.
