Decoupage Dollar Store Pumpkins with Mod Podge
For this month’s Farmhouse Hens Challenge, we are all sharing projects using paper.
The first thing I thought of was to decoupage something, because paper works so well with decoupage.
Now I just needed to decide what to decoupage on, and the Dollar Store foam pumpkins popped into my head immediately.
I picked up 8 recently and had a few left in my stash.
I’m so glad I grabbed these pumpkins when I did. They sell out so fast. I found out something new this year.
If your local Dollar Store doesn’t have what you need in stock, you can order it online with Free Shipping to your Local Store.
That’s great to keep in mind with the busy holiday season approaching.
Let me show you how easy these decoupage pumpkins are to make.
Be sure to stay to the end to see other Dollar Tree pumpkins I’ve created and the paper projects from the talented ladies in this Farmhouse Hens Challenge.
How To Make Decoupage Dollar Store Pumpkins
Supplies
Step 1.
Remove the stem from the dollar store pumpkin and paint it in whatever color you like.
I LOVE the bright blue metallic paint from DecoArt.
It has such an incredible sheen to it and you only need one coat to cover the pumpkin.
Step 2.
Cut the paper flowers that you want to attach to your pumpkins.
I used gorgeous toile flowers from a paper pack from the Anna Griffin collection with Cricut.
Step 3.
Use the foam brush to cover the paper flower with mod podge and place it on the pumpkin.
Be sure to add enough mod podge to secure the edges of the flower.
Step 4.
Continue to add the flowers to the pumpkin until you are happy with the placement.
I used four to five paper flowers for each pumpkin.
I also cut out gold leaves that were on ribbon found at the Dollar Store and love how the gold looks against the metallic blue paint.
Step 5.
Cover the entire pumpkin with two coats of mod podge to ensure the paper is sealed properly.
It also gives it a nice shine if you use the gloss mod podge.
Step 6.
Paint the stems using DecoArt twinkles in silver. This stuff is seriously cool!
It is brush on glitter paint-so no more messes with glitter everywhere.
I can’t wait to use this for Christmas ornaments!
For a little more height to the pumpkins, I painted wine corks with the same twinkles paint and ended up using those instead of the stems that came on the pumpkin, but you can use either.
Isn’t this such an easy way to update Dollar Store foam pumpkins?
Imagine how pretty these would be in purple, or pink for a little girl’s room?
The possibilities are endless with decoupage.
You can paint them and use cut outs of super heroes for a boy’s room.
Or add princess cut outs to a pink pumpkin.
Each year I try to create new DIY pumpkins.

I have been unable to find any sort of pumpkin in dollar store. They are all glass. Can these be painted with chalk paint?

Unfortunately I don’t think this process would work as well with glass. I know Michaels has foam pumpkins. If you use a 40% off coupon you can get one for just a few dollars. It’s crazy how fast the pumpkins sell out. Hope this helps! 😀

This makes me want to paint pumpkins in rainbow colors! The blue is so fun, especially with the gold. Thanks for sharing this budget idea!
