Beautiful sideboard buffet makeover in a classic navy paint from Jolie Home with very little prep work.
This sideboard buffet makeover was created in collaboration with Jolie Paint and contains affiliate links. However, all opinions and love for this paint are 100% mine! Please see my full disclosure here.
I’ve said it so many times but I’m still always amazed at the power of paint.
There is nothing better than taking a piece of quality furniture that was literally ready to be trashed and giving it new life.
I found this antique buffet at the transfer station in our town:
They have an area for recycled furniture that is free if you leave another piece.
It is amazing what people are giving away.
This antique sideboard caught my eye immediately. It is solid wood with a gorgeous copper top.
We needed a buffet for our eat in kitchen for extra storage and between the drawers and two large shelves underneath, this is perfect.
Plus, it gives me another area to decorate!
A nice gentleman helped me put it in the back of my car and I knew immediately that a classic navy paint would complement this piece perfectly!
It was tough to get a true picture of the shade of blue, but it is definitely a true navy and is a great addition to my kitchen with navy and white buffalo check decor.
I’ve used Jolie Paint before for my kitchen table makeover so I couldn’t wait to makeover this sideboard. Here is what I used:

How To Prep Furniture For Paint
STEP 1. PREP
Whenever I am painting an old piece of furniture, the first thing I do is give it a good cleaning.
I’ve been using Murphy’s Oil Soap for years and definitely recommend it.
The copper piece on top was in good shape, but needed a good scrubbing.
It looked amazing just from cleaning!
STEP 2. SAND
Jolie Paint adheres to most surfaces without sanding or priming!
All I did was give it a light sanding.
STEP 3. PAINT
The second I opened the can and saw this rich classic navy paint, I did a happy dance!
Look at how the paint goes right over the outdated golden color:
Paint thin coats and let it dry in between. This helps to ensure even coverage.
Look at the incredible coverage of Jolie paint after just one coat:
The one thing I had difficulty with was removing the hardware.
The decorative molding was not coming off without breaking.
I’ve learned to improvise, so I took a small paint brush and added some detail with gold paint.
The contrast of the gold paint against the classic navy is amazing!
STEP 4. WAX
I haven’t had a chance to wax this piece yet.
But here are the final steps for finishing a piece of painted furniture.
Before applying Jolie Finishing Wax, ensure that your paint is completely dry.
Use a wax brush to apply clear finishing wax, working in areas of approximately 2-3 square feet at a time.
Use a gentle sweeping motion to work the clear finishing wax into the paint.
Wait at least 8 hours before applying a second thin coat.
Jolie wax dries quickly in about 1-2 hours, and fully cures in about two weeks.
Sealing your furniture provides extra protection and is needed on a kitchen table that will be used daily.
I’ll add an updated photo showing the sideboard buffet waxed as soon as it is finished.
Here it is all decked for fall in it’s new home:

Hi Michelle! This looks so lovely. The color that you chose is extremely gorgeous. It just adds the perfect look to the overall aesthetic. Where should I add a sideboard like this though? In the living room or in my office? Thank you for sharing this!

Hi Michelle, WOW what a find at the transfer station! This navy color is gorgeous and painting your hardware gold was perfect. You really did a fantastic job on this piece, I haven't tried Jolie paint yet, but it sure looks like great paint to work with.
