Supplies Needed To Make Soy Teacup Candles

Start with clean, dry teacups. Any water will have a negative effect on the candle wax.

How beautiful is this vintage teacup? It is amazing what treasures you can find at the thrift store. I’ve had it in my hutch for many years. It was probably around $2.

Now, before you question how I could make a candle out of an antique teacup, I have an explanation.

A few years ago, I really started rethinking how I was using-or not using-collectibles and things I love.

It probably started after reading The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up, and the television series that followed, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.

When I downsized around that same time, the question that Marie Kondo asks, “does it spark joy” kept repeating in my head.

I had so many “things” packed away, or hidden in hutches. My way of thinking changed and I actually started using my wedding china and enjoying that special bottle of wine, instead of saving it for a special occasion.

So, that is how I feel about refinishing antique furniture, or upcycling vintage china. Plus, the good news is when this candle is gone, I can use the same teacup to make another. It’s a win-win!

You can read all about organizing and decluttering using the Konmari Method here.

 How To Make Teacup Candles

Now, let’s get to the candle tutorial.

Tape two bamboo skewers to the candle wick and place it in the teacup.

Add a dab of hot glue to the candle wick metal circle and secure it to the bottom of your teacup. This will help keep the wick straight while you are adding the hot wax.

Use a microwave safe dish to melt the candle flakes. I buy disposable container from the dollar store. Read the directions on your particular soy flakes.

It took me about 90 seconds, at 30 second intervals to melt the wax. Be sure to mix well in between.

You can also use a double boiler, but as long as you melt the wax in 30 second intervals (similar to melting candy wafers) it comes out just fine.

Once the wax flakes are melted, let it cool for a couple of minutes before adding the essential oils. I added about 8-10 drops of lavender, because it’s my favorite! melted candle wax

Slowly pour the wax into the teacup. You want to leave about an inch or so at the top. Let the wax harden at least a couple of hours, or overnight.

Slowly remove the skewers, and trim the wick. That’s all there is to it! Wasn’t that so easy? These would make a perfect gift for Mother’s Day.

You can use teacups that have significance and add her favorite fragrance. It might be nice to include a few essential oils with the teacup.

Soy Teacup Candles DIY - Easy Beginner Tutorial

Boy do I wish you could smell this! My entire downstairs smelled like lavender. It’s such a soothing fragrance. Now, I couldn’t stop there. My daughter and sister both decorate in a coastal decor.

Last summer I picked up several of these adorable coastal ramekins. They were the perfect size for candles. Look at these beauties:

I even place a few seashells in the candle, so when it melts they will float. For the fragrance I went with a citrus with lemon and tangerine.
