Enjoy a coastal home tour filled with DIY projects and beach-themed decorating ideas.
For the past week I have been visiting my sister, her husband and my nephew in sunny Florida!
They moved from RI about two years ago and have been updating their new home since.
Luckily my brother-in-law is a painter and carpenter so he has been able to complete everything himself.
There is so much to see, so grab a glass of lemonade and let’s get to it!
Coastal Home With DIY Custom Touches
The heart of the home is the kitchen and family great room.
It is such a large, bright space with vaulted ceilings, cherry cabinets and a gorgeous terrarium window the entire length of one wall.
As you can see, the window looks out into the lanai area with a beautiful inground pool and hot tub.
We’ll visit the outside shortly. There is so much to see inside!
The floor to ceiling fireplace is the focal point of the family room.
It is flanked with built in bookcases and a wood mantel.
The 60″ flatscreen is perfect for watching movies with the family that includes the friendliest American Eskimo Dog, Bear, who really wanted his picture taken!
The gorgeous seagull print over the mantel is from one of my favorite artists Craftberry Bush and you can find it here Society6
We went on a little shopping trip to Hobby Lobby and found these two gorgeous lanterns that have battery operated candles. We love Hobby Lobby!!
Most of the coastal decor items in the dining room shown below were purchased from Hobby Lobby.
The Mother of Pearl in the light above the dining table is so pretty and perfect for the coastal decor of this home.
While the room is not used often, it is warm and inviting with a pocket door leading to the kitchen.
The house is great for entertaining due to the open floor plan.
This mirror is something I have been in love with for many years.
My brother-in-law previously renovated homes in Newport and the owner of one of the homes was going to throw this out. Can you imagine?
I guess she was tired of it, but it is such a statement piece, especially in a coastal home.
The living room is off the dining room and houses a gorgeous entertainment center.
This is such a cool piece and I love the blue color.
They use this room as a guest room when people visit, as it has a pull out couch and the flatscreen doesn’t hurt either.
Most of the furniture was purchased in Florida and has beautiful weathered wood finishes like this piece in the entryway.
Of course I had to have something handmade for my sister, so I made her this Starfish Wreath that looks great in the entryway.
You can see how I made it here.
Let’s head into the master bedroom, which the homeowners just completely updated, including a master bath that my daughter could not stop talking about!
The soft shades of blue really add to the relaxing atmosphere in this room, which was just painted.
The gorgeous floors were also installed by the homeowners.
The nailhead trim headboard is another lovely piece and don’t even get me started on this slipper chair.
I so wanted to bring it home with me!!
The coastal decor continues throughout this space making the flow from room to room so effortless.
The master has a private patio perfect for a cup of coffee in the morning and a glass of wine at night!
As we continue into the master bathroom, you will see why this is my daughter’s favorite space.
Hello gorgeous silver metallic vanity!!
There was a closet leading into the master bathroom that was not needed, so the homeowners took the doors off and it became the perfect spot for a vanity for my sister.
This is a great DIY tip if you are lucky enough to have an unused closet.
They also added shelves to the side walls for added storage.
Check out the fabulous lighting in this master bathroom:
The cut crystal casts the most beautiful glow on the ceiling and I have to point out the floors that were also just installed:
Here is another simple but effective way to update a builder grade bathroom mirror.
Just add decorative molding around all sides to make it appear custom as the homeowners did here:
The old tile was ripped out and updated here:
Of course Florida Living is all about the outdoor spaces that can pretty much be used year round, as long as you can stand the heat.
This outdoor space is so inviting and another great space for entertaining.
Let’s start with the main area off the family room into the lanai:
Large ceiling fans help with the heat and there is a hot tub as well.
In the background you will see the patio off the master.
The homeowners did a ton of work on the landscaping which really shows in this beautiful space:
This sun deck is perfect for catching some rays.
My brother-in-law built the fabulous pergola as well as the benches around the fire pit:
There is an outdoor shower to wash the sand off after a day at the beach:
Banana anyone:
Several times a day these beautiful cranes stop by for a visit and some birdseed.
They are so elegant and we looked forward to their visit!
I can’t leave out another bird friend that we enjoyed visiting this week- meet Bird:
He spent most of the time sitting on someone’s shoulder and talking or literally copying our laughter. This bird is a trip!
