Modern Cozy Living Room Decor
What do you do when your design style changes? When we moved into our apartment two years ago we decorated with a neutral color palette.
Our oversized gray sectional sofa took over the living room and made the small space look cramped and cluttered.
Here you can see how it looks decorated for Christmas.
After deciding to stay here for one more year, it was time for a change!
Out with the sea of gray and white and in with lots of beautiful warm colors that compliment the gorgeous hardwood floors.
How to Add a Mid-Century Modern Feel to Your Living Room
The first thing I did was create a Pinterest board to save photos of sofas that I liked.
For my living room makeover I decided to go with a velvet sofa and ottoman in a gorgeous green color.
The sofa is from Wayfair, but here is a similar velvet l-shaped sofa at an affordable price.
This furniture piece is definitely the focal point of the living space.
Once the sofa was in place I was inspired to paint our old hutch with Benjamin Moore Chrome Green paint.
Look how lovely it looks with the sofa.
There is plenty of natural light coming in from the window and balcony door so I was not worried about it being too dark.
Quick tip: hang curtains above the window frame to make the ceiling appear higher.
An easy way to create a cozy atmosphere is to add plenty of throw pillows and soft blankets for comfy seating. Ambient lighting also adds to that cozy factor.
The key elements in mid-century modern decor includes clean lines and minimal decor so I chose to go with floor lamps instead of table lamps.
The metal arch floor lamp works well with the wood tones in the large coffee table and is a great way to add extra texture.
I love how the sofa has black and gold legs. It really pays off to take your time when searching for a sofa. Be sure to read the reviews as well, especially when ordering online.
When decorating above a sofa a gallery wall is a popular way to add visual appeal and create an inviting space.
However, I chose to go with oversized wall art to fill in this space. The 19th century vintage print is called “roses in a bowl” by Henri Fantin-Latour French 1883.
One of the reasons I chose to go with large wall art is I tend to change out the art for different seasons or holidays.
I downloaded the print free from The Metropolitan Museum of Art and had it printed at Staples. It is a fairly inexpensive way to create large art, especially in this size of 48″x36″.
One of my favorite DIY projects is this lovely pressed flower wall art. It was super simple to make and you can see the full tutorial to make your own.
Look at all of that yummy texture and depth, especially when added to a vintage gold frame.
It looks lovely above my favorite antique record player. I scored the record player stand for a great price on Amazon.
The bust was a recent Michaels find. I just love it!

Add an Accent Chair
Having plenty of comfortable furniture is important in a living room.
The IKEA Ektorp accent chair that I’ve had for several years also got a makeover with a new beautiful blue velvet slipcover.
I’m obsessed with the bright blue color and how it compliments the dark green living room sofa.
This is the perfect spot to read a good book and it also makes the small living room feel warm and welcoming.
A few cozy decorative items are added to the coffee table and fireplace mantel. Add accent lights to vases that are on a timer for ambiance.
Incorporating natural materials is the best way to add visual interest and create an inviting space.
Bring in accent pieces like tall floor plants either real or faux.
The faux fiddle leaf tree and olive tree by Realead are beautifully made. Floor plants are an easy way to fill in a corner and add more texture.
Faux plants have come a long way in the past few years-no green thumb needed!
Another throw is added to the chair perfect for colder months. If you follow me on Facebook you know I am a big fan of decorating with free printables.
The pretty spring banner is from The Navage Patch. Be sure to stop by and tell them I sent you! 🙂
Apartment Living Room
I’m a huge fan of custom fireplaces and fell in love with this ornate fireplace. I’ve moved it to 3 different homes and this baby is heavy!
Incorporate soft textures if possible. I’m a big fan of decorating with faux fur accent pieces like a DIY leopard stool. Every room should have something leopard.
The mantel is the perfect place to add simple touches like a pair of vases with pampas grass.
Again, the natural elements are a great way to add a modern Boho vibe and a bit of nature.
That’s all there is to it! A beautiful colorful mid-century modern living room makeover full of texture, warmth and plenty of coziness.
Hopefully, this inspires you to step out of your comfort zone and go with bright and bold colors in your home.

Mid-Century Modern also known as MCM includes furniture with clean lines, with characteristics like tapered legs, thin profile silhouettes, wood, leather and bright colors.
Choose a couple of key statement pieces like a sofa and accent chair in bold colors and rich textures like wood and metal.
