Updated 2026

I’d like to take a moment to point out the mistake I made on this project. This is something I made and first posted in 2017.

You will notice that the first camel is missing his head. Obviously, that was not intentional. It was a crafting fail and was not noticed by anyone (including me) until recently.

I chose not to fix it or take it down as it is a reminder that even seasoned crafters make mistakes.

One of the things I have always tried to convey on this page is that everyone can craft, it is meant to be fun and light. Mistakes happen, but give yourself grace and enjoy the creative challenge.

With how unsettled life can be in these challenging times, having a hobby, or anything that helps you unwind and relax is so important.

So, when I look at this craft that I proudly hang each holiday season, I will smile and remind myself to slow down, enjoy the season and most importantly, continue to do what I love! 🙂

Christmas Sign

The “Wise Men Still Seek Him” is one of my favorite sentiments, so the moment I saw this beautiful stencils I knew it would be perfect for a DIY Christmas sign.

But, why stop there? I’ll show you how to turn it into a lighted sign that adds to the cozy ambiance and charm we love for the holidays.

I’ll show you how easy it is to make.

This would also make a lovely handmade gift for friends and family. It is something that they can bring out every year and think of your kindness.

The Wise Men stencil is the perfect fit for the wood pallet sign.

I love that the pallet is framed. It just gives it a more finished look.

Wood Christmas Sign Tutorial

Step 1. Slowly remove the bottom sheet of the stencil and place it where you want it on the wood sign.

The stencil is sticky so it will stay in place.

As I wanted the natural color of the frame to be used for the stencil, I placed the vinyl pieces of the stencil down first and painted over it.

Step 2. Use a credit card to smooth out the wrinkles and ensure all the vinyl is transferred. Remove the top cover from the sign.

Step 3. You can use the stencil as is, or you can paint over it as I show in the next step.

My decor includes neutrals with pops of blue, so I painted the frame with two coats of a rich deep blue.

This also is a good color to represent the night sky.

Step 4. While the piece was still wet, use a tooth pick to remove the vinyl. This will reveal the natural wood base of the sign.

Next up, use a small brush to fill in any spots that are light and touch up any errors.

Step 5. Now to add the lights! Something about lights makes everything better, especially during the holidays.

I used 35 ct mini lights and just taped them to the back of the frame.

You are able to see them through the slats which is so cool!

That’s all there is to it! Now you have a gorgeous DIY lighted Christmas sign that you can keep or gift.

This wood serving tray that I made last year would also make a great Christmas Gift.

Hopefully, this inspires you to make your own handmade gifts this holiday season.

**WHY IS THE 1ST CAMEL'S HEAD MISSING? The 1st thing I spotted at the start of this post is that THE 1st CAMEL is HEADLESS...!! (along with the overly large camels' feet).. HOW on earth did you NOT notice the CAMEL'S MISSING HEAD when you made it & displayed it, & spent ages photographing it, & creating this post!?!? HOW DID YOU NOT NOTICE? COMMON SENSE tells you ALL THE CAMELS SHOULD HAVE HEADS! It's NOT the story of the 3 wise men & their HEADLESS CAMEL! I don't know what's worse, that YOU NEVER NOTICED THE MISSING CAMEL'S HEAD, OR HOW NOT 1 of the comments praising how wonderful this is NEVER NOTICED EITHER!?! Shows how much attention people REALLY pay, eh! Especially as ALL 3 camels HAVE THEIR HEADS in the 1st stencil photo with the backing, AND in the next photo where you'd STUCK the stencil down on the wooden sign. You can CLEARLY SEE the 1st camel's head BELOW the STAR the Magi are following.. AND YET... in the next photo, where you show AFTER you've removed the stencil backing, & ALL PHOTOS OF THE FINISHED WORK, THE 1ST CAMEL'S HEAD IS MISSING! HOW...? How did you manage to NOT NOTICE the 1st CAMEL'S HEAD WAS MISSING And HOW COULD YOU NOT NOTICE THAT ALL 3 CAMELS DON'T HAVE HEADS in the finished work? Especially as the 1st camel is DIRECTLY BELOW THE STAR!! Wow, just wow...!! That you could post this HAVING DECAPITATED THE 1st CAMEL'S HEAD, is genuinely beyond me..... (Oh & I'm NOT a troll, or usually negative.. I've only just discovered your work in a group link from someone else's site, & liked the 1st post of xmas work you did, & searched for more of your posts.. But come on.. Wise Man on a DECAPITATED camel.. NOT really full of the joys of xmas is it!)

**(Reposting to make clearer that the head is IN the photos WITH the stencil "BACKING". Please delete my 1st comment. Thanks.)

Oh I love this! And I love that it doesn't involve a cricut or vinyl cutting machine as I don't have one of those. Thank you for sharing the stencil source! That's a great resource.
