This Halloween, enjoy your morning cup of coffee in an adorable ghost mug inspired by the Pottery Barn Halloween collection.
It’s super easy to make and you can’t beat the price tag. The mugs are from the dollar store so you can make about 4-5 mugs for the price of one at Pottery Barn!
This cute Halloween coffee mug is also perfect to include in a spooky basket Halloween gift.
Add a few hot chocolate bombs and attach a “you’ve been booed gift tag” and you have a thoughtful gift in no time.
The mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe, but I recommend hand washing so the paint doesn’t chip.
I’ll also share some tips for sealing the mugs in the printable card below.

I’m sharing this ghost coffee cup as part of this month’s Thrifty Style Team’s challenge, so be sure to check out all of their affordable home decorating ideas at the bottom of this post.
There are so many beautiful ideas!
This is a favorite Pottery Barn dupe. My daughter loves Tik Tok and is always showing me viral dupes and asking if I can make them.
That is a challenge I will NEVER back down from! 🙂 The first Pottery Barn knock-off I made to decorate for the spooky season was the cute bat pillow that is all over Pinterest.
The sherpa pumpkin pillow shown HERE was next. I haven’t had a chance to share the tutorial for that cozy piece yet but hope to have it this weekend.
Now let’s get to this DIY coffee cup.
Supplies Needed To Make A Pottery Barn Inspired Ghost Mug
- Ceramic Coffee Mug
- Black Paint – I used DecoArt Acrylic Paint in Lamp Black
- Q-tips – yup Q-tips! – you can also use a narrow paint brush
- Rubbing Alcohol
How to Make Ghost Mugs
Step 1. Clean the mug
Clean the mug with rubbing alcohol to remove any fingerprints or dust.
Step 2. Add the eyes
Use a Q-tip to dab a small circle of paint onto the coffee mug. You can see how I used this same technique to paint wine glasses HERE.
Quick tip-start with a small dot then slowly add to it until you get the size you like.
It also helps to have a picture up of the Pottery Barn ghost mug up on your phone or an iPad to use as a reference.
Of course, it’s always fun to add your own spin to your project, like I did.
Instead of having a point on the eyes, I made them rounded. Go with whatever you like.
You could even make a spooky ghost if you want.
It’s important not to add paint at the top of the mug, as it can’t come in contact with your mouth.
Step 3. Add the mouth
Now you want to complete the ghost’s face by adding a mouth.
Place it centered below the eyes. I made my mouth into a larger oval shape, so it is basically a boo mug!
You could even write boo on the opposite side. That’s all there is to it. Easy peasy.
Allow the paint to cure for at least four hours, or overnight to be safe.
Now you can enjoy your favorite hot chocolate or coffee in your sweet new mug.
I just happened to have a small ironstone pitcher handy, so I turned that into a ghost too!
My plan is to place Halloween hot chocolate bombs (recipe coming tomorrow) into the mug.
Then use the small pitcher for hot milk to pour over the hot cocoa bombs. I’ll be sure to share the yummy recipe!
How to Make Painted Coffee Mugs Dishwasher Safe
To make the paint top shelf dishwasher safe, it is necessary to bake them in the oven.
Set the oven temperature to 275 degrees and bake for thirty minutes.
If you are just going to hand wash them, it is not necessary to bake them.
I really hope you enjoyed this easy Halloween craft.
Don’t forget to leave a comment to let me know if you give this Halloween coffee mug a try.
Happy Halloween!
