Today we are not only talking about fun crafts-there will be that-but also about a very important project that we should all be aware of for Halloween. It’s called the Teal Pumpkin Project. 

What Is The Teal Pumpkin Project?

If you have a child with a food allergy, you know how scary it can be to manage on a daily basis. Halloween is especially tricky, as so many popular Halloween candy contains common allergens.  

No child wants to miss out on trick or treating. The good news is they don’t have to! The Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) group implemented the Teal Pumpkin Project in 2014 to raise awareness of food allergies.  

According to FARE, one in 13 children has a food allergy. 

Families can feel secure taking their kids out for Halloween by looking for homes featuring teal pumpkins! This means those homes also have non-food treats or allergy-free candy for your trick or treaters.

FARE has so many great resources available now that we can all share. One thing I thought was really cool is they actually have a Teal Pumpkin Project Map where you can enter your zip code and see what homes will be handing out allergy-friendly treats.

You can also add your address to the Project Map so your neighbors know you will have treats available. How cool is that?

History Of The Teal Pumpkin Project

While FARE implemented The Teal Pumpkin Project in 2014, the idea to place a teal pumpkin outside for Halloween, was actually started by Mom, Becky, a single mom of two!

It doesn’t surprise me at all that a Mom came up with this genius idea. We are fierce in protecting our kids! You can read all about this amazing supermom here:

Teal Pumpkin Project Non-Food Treat Ideas

There are so many inexpensive alternatives to candy on Halloween. Just stroll the aisles of the Dollar Store and you will find tons of items that kids would love to receive.

Here are ten ideas:

• Stickers
• Crayons 
• Coloring Books
• Bubbles
• Stickers
• Halloween erasers
• Slinkies
• Bouncy balls
• Spider rings
• Vampire fangs

You can still give out candy to kids without allergies, just be sure to keep them separated.

Now, I did mention there would be fun crafts, so let’s get to this pretty teal succulent pumpkin that I plan to place on my porch for Halloween this year.

How To Make A Teal Succulent Pumpkin

 

Supplies

• White Pumpkin – from Michael’s 
• DecoArt Peacock Teal Acrylic Paint
• Paint Brushes
• Faux Succulents
• Hot Glue Gun  – this is my favorite and it’s cordless!
• Fall Leaves 

 

Step 1.

Paint the white pumpkin with 2-3 coats of teal paint. It is best to let it dry in between coats. 

Step 2.

Start hot gluing the succulents onto the top of the pumpkin. There is really no rhyme or reason to how I attached these. I just started with the two large succulents and then filled in around the pumpkin until I was happy with the placement. 

Step 3.

Hot glue fall leaves around the bottom of the succulents. I went with all white, as it not only goes with my home decor, but I like how it looks against the teal.

You can totally go with classic fall colors if you like. Have fun with it and really make it your own!

I love the frosted succulents. These were found at Michael’s after Christmas last year for 80% off! The best time to buy silk flowers and succulents is after the holidays! 

You can totally stop here and display your pretty teal pumpkin indoors or on a covered porch. But I felt it was missing a little something, so Chalk Couture to the rescue!
