For my contribution to this thrifty challenge, I decided to hit my craft stash to make yarn wrapped hearts using a piece of cardboard and dollar store yarn.
I LOVE sharing crafts that are cheap and easy to make, but still look beautiful. These yarn hearts check all the boxes.
Supplies Needed For Valentine Garland
- Pink Chenille Yarn
- Scrap Cardboard
- Scotch Tape or Hot Glue Gun – this cordless is my favorite!
- Fabric Scissors
- Pencil or Marker

If you haven’t been to Dollar Tree lately, give it a try. They really have stepped up their game since adding the Crafters Square section.
The beautiful pink chenille yarn would have easily been 3x the price at most craft stores.
How To Make Yarn Wrapped Hearts
Step 1. Trace A Heart Shape and Cut
The first step is to draw a heart shape onto a piece of cardboard.
You can either use a free printable Valentine heart or freehand one.
I had a heart shaped ornament I picked up at the after Christmas sales so I used that.
![tracing heart shape on cardboard](https://ourcraftymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yarn-Wrapped-Hearts-Valentine-Garland-45.jpg.webp)
Simply use a pencil or marker to trace around the heart directly onto your cardboard.
![heart shapes traced on cardboard](https://ourcraftymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yarn-Wrapped-Hearts-Valentine-Garland-47.jpg.webp)
Repeat this process until you have as many hearts as you want.
I decided to make a Valentine’s Day banner so I made 12 easy yarn hearts.
Cut out the cardboard with craft scissors.

Step 2. Start Wrapping Cardboard Hearts
Take a piece of yarn and tape it to one side of the cardboard heart.
You can also use a glue gun, but I wanted to make this craft as easy as possible.
![taping yarn to cardboard heart](https://ourcraftymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yarn-Wrapped-Hearts-Valentine-Garland-39.jpg.webp)
Since you won’t see the back of the heart, tape makes it super simple.
If you do want to make the back pretty why not use washi tape?
Step 3. Completely Cover Cardboard Heart
The next step is to continue wrapping the heart with yarn until it is completely covered.
I only used one piece of tape for this easy DIY Valentines Day craft.

Our kitty, Nala was my helper today! 🙂 I don’t know what it is about cats and yarn, but she couldn’t get enough of it.
![nala cat with yarn](https://ourcraftymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yarn-Wrapped-Hearts-Valentine-Garland-48.jpg.webp)
There is no need to worry about how you are wrapping the hearts. Feel free to wrap them vertically and horizontally. This actually gives them more dimension. It also helps keep the yarn secure.
![tying a knot in yarn](https://ourcraftymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yarn-Wrapped-Hearts-Valentine-Garland-29.jpg.webp)
When you get to the end and there is no more cardboard showing, tie a knot at the end of the yarn and snip it so it doesn’t show.

Step 4. Attach a Piece of Yarn for Banner
If you are planning on decorating with the hearts on their own (not in a banner) you are done.
Just repeat the process for however many hearts you need.
Don’t you love this bright pink color?
![bowl of yarn wrapped hearts](https://ourcraftymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yarn-Wrapped-Hearts-Valentine-Garland-1.jpg.webp)
A collection of hearts would look great in a pretty dough bowl centerpiece or used as decorations at a Valentine’s Day party.
Scatter them around a table setting, or add them to a tiered tray.
To make the hearts into a banner secure a piece of yarn to the back by tying it.
![tying yarn to heart](https://ourcraftymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yarn-Wrapped-Hearts-Valentine-Garland-44.jpg.webp)
Then tie each heart to a long piece of twine or use an adorable pompom garland like I did!
![pompom and yarn wrapped hearts banner on mantel](https://ourcraftymom.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Yarn-Wrapped-Hearts-Valentine-Garland-33-2.jpg.webp)
The garland was another after Christmas craft store find, but here is a similar pompom garland on Amazon for a good price.

So what do you think about this easy yarn Valentine’s Day decor? I’m so happy with how it turned out. The pop of pink on the mantel makes me smile. 🙂
If you want to make your own, each skein of yarn makes 6 hearts, so you need 2 skeins for a banner with 12 hearts.
Since the cardboard is free, this project will be under $3! You can’t beat that.

Iโm so glad you like it! I found the perfect green color to make shamrocks next. That way I can just change them out. Nothing like quick & easy crafts. ๐

This garland is adorable. The fluffy pom poms work so well with those soft velvety hearts.
