Tips for Planting an Outdoor Herb Garden
First, you want to choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
Herbs require plenty of sunlight to grow properly.
Also, consider the soil type in the chosen location as well as drainage patterns because poor draining soil quality and standing water can affect how your herbs grow.
Second, decide which types of herbs will grow well in your climate zone.
Research what planted herbs work best with your growing season.
Another important question for your herb garden is will you be starting from seed or buying established plants?
Perennial herbs such as lavender, sage or thyme are great choices for climates with mild winters while annuals such as basil need warm weather to thrive.
While I chose to go with a small container garden, you may want to consider a raised bed or garden bed if you have the space.
Let me show you the herb garden that I am sharing today.
Herbs That Can Be Planted In The Same Galvanized Bucket
Before planting your herb garden, be sure to research what herbs can be planted together.
The folks at your local garden center are usually very helpful with answering questions.
It’s definitely worth paying a little extra at the garden center for this reason.
The home stores are great if you know what you are doing, but this is only my second herb garden, so I had a few questions.
After confirming that these herbs could be planted in the same galvanized bucket, these are the herbs that I chose:
- thyme
- parsley
- basil
- rosemary
- oregano
- sage
- chives
This galvanized bucket was found at the flea market for $5!
With flea market and yard sale season upon us, keep an eye out for galvanized containers if you want to make your own herb garden.
It’s also a perfect size to plant vegetables.
To give it a little detail and interest, I added “garden” to the center using a Chalk Couture transfer.
Be sure to seal it with a clear sealant to protect it.
Planting an Herb Garden In A Galvanized Bucket
There are three important things when growing container gardens:
- Fresh soil
- Good Drainage
- Plenty of sun – check to see how many hours of sunlight your plants will need
- Plenty of water
You can use any type of container as a planter, as long as it has proper drainage, but galvanized buckets work great!
How to Start an Herb Garden
Instructions:
Step 1.
Be sure to drill several holes in the bottom of your galvanized bucket, otherwise their will be an issue with drainage.
Step 2.
Fill the bucket with fresh soil about 3/4 of the way full.
Step 3.
Add your herbs spreading them out so they have enough room to grow.
Step 4.
Be sure to keep your herbs properly watered and fertilized and you should have no problem with fresh herbs all summer long!
