Neutral Early Fall Decorations To Create A Warm And Cozy Home

Sharing is caring!

Now that September is here and the kids are back to school, it’s time to think about adding some early fall decorations to your home.

While it may be a little too early in the season to add real pumpkins to your home decor, it is the perfect time to add pops of seasonal color!

I’m thrilled to be joining a talented group of home decor enthusiasts in the Bloggers’ Best Fall Home Tours for 2023!

This is my first year participating and I’m pretty excited. Once you see all the fall inspiration shared this week I know you will be excited too.

About Our Crafty Mom

If you are new to Our Crafty Mom-welcome! I’m Michelle, a lifelong New Englander currently residing in beautiful New Hampshire.

I have two grown children, Derek 32 yo and Amanda 27 yo.

I followed my daughter to New Hampshire from Rhode Island after she graduated college and we currently share an apartment together in a quiet suburb.

One of my favorite quotes is “Having a daughter is God’s way of saying, here, thought you could use a lifelong friend”.

That is absolutely how I feel. 🙂

I always kick off fall on the blog by sharing my favorite fall image that I took a few years ago:

This bridge is located on the campus of my daughter’s campus. Imagine walking by that view each day?

Fall Decor Ideas For The Home

Decorating for fall is pretty much my absolute favorite thing to do.

As soon as the calendar turns to September, I pull out my fall decor and get started.

Of course, I’ve already browsed my favorite arts and crafts store looking for inspiration to strike.

This year my inspiration piece came to me and I didn’t even have to leave my home. More on that later.

The first thing I change out for a new season or holiday is the wreath on the front door.

This year I brought back the pretty DIY fall door hanger from last year.

The pale peach blends perfectly with the rich shades of burgundy, warm earth tones and classic burnt orange color palette I’m decorating with.

Can you believe the fluffy farmhouse cotton stem are from Dollar Tree?

Today I’m sharing our open living and dining area.

Our home is small, about 1,000 sf, so I had to learn that “less is more” when decorating this space.

One thing that is great about this is every piece of decor displayed is something I love.

Plus, I redecorate often, so I never get bored.

This apartment was completely remodeled right before we moved in.

The hardwood floors were a huge selling point. They are so warm and inviting.

A DIY wood bench is just the right size for the entryway-plus it opens for storage.

Storage is key in small space living!

The sweet pillow is a $5 Target spot find. Anyone else love the Bullseye section at Target?

My large farmhouse style hutch sits across from our dining table, but I am waiting for one piece to finish decorating it for fall.

I was so bummed when delivery was delayed. I’ll definitely add the photos for the hutch as soon as it arrives-hopefully before Friday.

For now, you can see how it was decorated with a fun bumble bee theme.

Fall Inspiration Piece from Decocrated

Remember I mentioned the inspiration for this year’s color palette?

The minute I saw the rich deep red dyed eucalyptus stems shown in the image below, I was obsessed.

And I didn’t even have to leave my home to get them!

The stems and black vase were included in the Decocrated subscription box for Halloween, though I chose to use them for fall.

The color inspired me to make the vintage wall pocket that I displayed on a large window arch.

entryway table

This small console table was a thrift store find that I painted with silver metallic paint.

See what the table looked like painted with blue metallic paint.

The curved edges of this piece adds a bit of softness plus it is narrow so it doesn’t take up much space.

Quick decorating tip-follow the rules of threes when decorating a table, mantel or any vignette

I’ve talked many times before about my favorite decorating technique-decorating with an odd number of items, like 3 or 5.

There is a really helpful article from Apartment Therapy that talks all about the rules of threes here.

You can see how I followed that process with this pretty fall vignette. There are 7 items used on this table creating a triangle.

The vase and eucalyptus stems add height and texture. The mix of metallic and wood adds interest and dimension.

Don’t be afraid to mix metal and wood-it works!

The fall art brings the eye back up creating a triangle effect.

Mix in wood beads and a couple of ceramic pumpkins and you have a beautiful fall vignette that took no time at all to create.

Gathering Sunflowers for Garland

If you follow me on Facebook you may have seen that Amanda and I attended a super fun sunflower festival with the largest sunflowers I’ve ever seen!

sunflowers

They were so stunning that I turned them into watercolor art you can download here.

I was determined to dry the sunflowers this year and I’m happy to say I did!

They definitely have a more natural rustic look to them when they are dried, but I still love them.

fall mantel in natural tones

I was inspired to decorate my mantel with a natural theme that included a DIY sunflower garland with pine cones, bay leaves and sticks.

A few pumpkins and a large gourd kept with the neutral theme but added texture.

A pair of ceramic vases filled with pampas grass anchor each end of the mantel.

Large sunflower heads were placed on candle holders for a bit of texture.

The large IKEA Ektorp chair is my “mom chair”.

It needs a new cover because Amanda’s kitty has done some damage.

That is why you see it covered with throws. At least they are comfy and cozy throws!

This is the best reading chair with the Edison’s Light behind it.

The fire on, a candle lit and a glass of wine or apple cider=my happy place!

A favorite way to decorate for fall is to bring in elements of nature, like dried gourds, sunflowers and pine cones.

Pampas grass is another way to add tons of texture into your fall home decor.

Once it gets a little closer to Halloween I will add real pumpkins to this display.

This mantel has a rustic farmhouse feel to it that is a little different for me but I’m loving it!

Don’t forget to decorate the hearth. A simple fall basket with a soft cozy throw is perfect for those cool nights that will hopefully be here soon.

Farmhouse Fall Decor Living Room

Our fall living room continues with the rich and warm color palette that we talked about earlier.

The coffee table has a large tray to anchor the table.

It holds an eye catching vase of fall flowers which acts as a focal point in this space.

To decorate the living room for fall, I added several cozy throw pillows with pillow covers in fall colors, as well as several comfy throw blankets perfect for snuggling up with a good movie.

The home decor in this space is neutral with pops of rich golds, burgundy and coppers that I love.

Hopefully you were inspired by these early fall decorations. Please let me know in the comments below what your favorite was, or if you give any of the DIY projects a try.

Love your cute fall table with the red eucalyptus. I'll have to be on the lookout for that this fall. The dried sunflowers are fabulous too, and I love the texture they add to your mantel!
