Gingerbread Mugs Faux Whipped Cream Toppers
Gingerbread palooza continues with gingerbread faux whipped cream mug toppers. If you follow me on Facebook you know this week is all about gingerbread crafts, decor and recipes.
Here are the projects shared so far:
- Gingerbread themed Christmas Tree
- Gingerbread Christmas Tree Ornaments
- Dollar Tree Dollhouse Gingerbread Houses
I’ve been wanting to try my hand at mug toppers for a few years after seeing “fake bakes” on Pinterest. They are so fun to make!
I can definitely see myself making more of these for different holidays, birthdays or for a whimsical handmade gift.
The good news is they are easier to make than you may think. In fact, this would be a great craft to make with the kiddos.
Here is what you need to make your own.
Faux Whipped Cream Toppers Supplies
- Disposable Decorating Pastry Bags – mine are from Michaels, but these are similar
- Drop Flower Decorating Tip No. 2D
- Dap Fast’n Final Lightweigh Spackling – I picked mine up at Lowe’s
- Silicone Jar Spatula
- Cardboard
- Paper Towels or Tissue Paper
- Hot Glue Gun – this is my favorite!
- Decorative Paper Straws
- Gingerbread Mugs – mine are from Target Bullseye and Dollar General
- Scissors
Step 1. Measure the mug for topper
Place the mug upside down on a piece of cardboard. Use a pencil to trace around it. Cut it out with sharp scissors or x-acto knife.
Step 2. Create a base for faux whipped cream toppers
There are several ways to create a base for the whipped cream. I’m always looking for the most cost-effective way to create. So I used paper towels for the base.
You can also pick up Styrofoam balls from Dollar Tree, however, my store was sold out. Paper towels worked just fine. Add a bit of hot glue to secure it to the cardboard.
If you want to make the mug topper permanent, run a bead of hot glue around the cardboard base and secure it to the mug. You can also use E-6000 for extra support.
I’m just using mine to decorate my coffee bar so I am just placing the mug topper on the mug and not gluing it. For a gift idea, you definitely want to secure it.
Step 3. Prepare the pastry bag
Start by placing the flower decorating tip in the pastry bag. I chose to use disposable pastry bags.
Step 4. Load the bag with spackle
The lightweight spackle is very easy to use. I kept it the white color, however, you can add a bit of acrylic paint if you want to change the color.
I may try adding brown for a chocolate look. Pink would also look pretty.
Use a small silicone spatula to scoop the spackling into the bag. 1/2 bag is enough for 2 mug toppers. Be sure to push the spackle all the way down to the tip.
Step 5. Add the spackle to mug toppers
Now, for the fun part-decorating the toppers! It is just like frosting cupcakes with a pastry bag. Slowly go around the cardboard topper. Moving it up and down will get a nice finish.
Make it as tall as you like. This was my first time trying this and it was much easier than I thought. Be sure to use the lightweight spackle. It truly worked great!
Then just add whatever decorative elements you want when the spackle is still wet. Let the toppers dry overnight.
I found the cutest mini Christmas embellishments at Michaels craft store.
They have an entire section called Christmas minis that are just the right size for mug toppers. Be sure to get them on sale, or use a coupon.
I also found this set of Christmas charms on Amazon that is priced well.
Where to find gingerbread themed mugs
Before we get to the mugs, I just had to mention the beautiful Santa figurine in this photo. My son bought him for me for Christmas last year and I’m obsessed!
The pastry bag with the gingerbread house is perfect to display with gingerbread themed decor.
Gingerbread decor is everywhere you look this season. But, some of the popular gingerbread mugs have gone viral so they are difficult to find.
The cutie below is from Dollar General and he was only $3!
Target has the cutest gingerbread house mug and gingerbread man mug that are viral on TikTok, but they are super difficult to find.
One tip is to check the website for your local Target to see if they are in stock before going. I was super excited to find these 2 adorable mugs at my local store, after a few searches.
Of course, Amazon has several pretty holiday mugs, but they can be a bit pricey. Here are a few options if you can’t find any at your local Target or Dollar General.
Also, Homegoods and JoAnn Crafts has a great selection.
- Gingerbread Mugs – set of 2 gingerbread men
- Sur la Table Gingerbread Man Mug
- 6 pc set Gingerbread House Mugs – this would be a great set for gift giving for teachers, neighbors, co-workers and friends.
