What Is a DIY Tinsel Tree (And Why Make One)

A DIY tinsel tree is a handmade version of those vintage aluminum and feather tinsel trees that were popular back in the mid-20th century.

They’re making a comeback as people embrace retro Christmas decor, and I can see why!

This little tree is perfect for decorating a tabletop, mantel, or shelf, adding a touch of vintage charm without replacing your full-size Christmas tree.

I’ve been wanting to add a vintage tinsel tree to my Christmas decor for many years, but I have not been able to find a vintage tree within my price range, so I did the next best thing.

I made my own vintage inspired tinsel trees as an affordable option. I’m so happy with how they turned out. I’m embracing an old fashioned christmas aesthetic this holiday season.

In fact, I’m even adding silver tinsel to my main Christmas tree; stay tuned for that!

Supplies You’ll Need for a DIY Tinsel Christmas Tree

Here is what I used to make this tinsel tree.

  • 18-24 inches for a tabletop tree – mine are from Dollar Tree, but they also sell them at Target, Michaels and Hobby Lobby in a few different colors.
  • Mini glass balls – I chose pink to match my bedroom decor
  • Scissors
  • Craft foam – to keep the tree straight and secure it in the container
  • Containers of your choice – mine are from the thrift store. You can use any vessel that you like, including small flower pots, silver bowls, candle holders.
  • Embellishments – I chose to keep it very simple with just ornaments, but you can add fairy lights, twinkling lights or any other small decorations.
  • Faux Fur – to cover the base of the tree, or cover the base with buffalo snow, paper shreds and glitter.

How to Make Your DIY Tinsel Tree Step by Step

It’s super easy to build a tinsel Christmas tree at home with this tinsel tree diy, Dollar Tree tinsel tree makeover.

Trim the Branches

The first step is to trim each branch of the tree as short as you prefer. This is a very messy project, so be sure to place something down to collect the cut branches. I am still sweeping up pieces!

Continue to trim the remaining branches until you are happy with the look.

Tips for a Full, Straight Tinsel Tree

Place craft foam into your container. Push the base of the the tree into the craft foam. You may need to weight the base (or use a heavier wood circle) to stop leaning.

It also helps to work in good light so gaps between tiers are easy to spot, and check alignment with the trunk to ensure each level of the tree is evenly spaced.

Add the Tiny Ornaments

Once the tree is secure in the base, evenly space out the branches and add the ornaments. Fairy lights may make an appearance, but for now I am enjoying this minimalist tree on my nightstand.

How to Decorate Your Tinsel Tree

It helps to use lightweight ornaments so the branches don’t droop. Mini glass balls, vintage-style jadeite or mercury glass pieces, along with small ribbon bows, and battery-operated mini lights work well for a tabletop tree.

You can also decorate the tree with Dollar Tree tinsel garlands or tinsel santa hats as a quick alternate for small accents.

Storing Your Tinsel Tree

It is super simple to store this tabletop tree. Simply remove the ornaments and place them in a small lidded container. Remove the container and wrap in tissue paper and store in a box.

Lay the tree branches flat and place in a gift bag or box with tissue paper between layers to keep tinsel branches from flattening.
