- Choose 2 to 3 main colors plus one metallic or neutral so the tree feels cohesive.
- Match your room. Warm reds, golds and wood tones suit traditional and farmhouse spaces, while blue, silver and white feel fresh in cooler rooms.
- Start with what you own, then fill in with DIY ornaments and thrift store finds.
How to Choose a Christmas Tree Theme (and Color Scheme)
The easiest way to choose a Christmas tree theme is to start with the colors already in your room and the ornaments you love most.
Classic red, green and gold is still the go-to Christmas tree color scheme, but silver, blue and blush palettes have become popular too.
Use this chart as a starting point for matching Christmas tree theme ideas and color schemes to your home. These are general design guidelines, so trust your own taste.
| Tree theme | Colors | Works well with | Light tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional | Red, green, gold, plaid | Warm neutrals, wood tones, cozy fireplace rooms | Warm white |
| Farmhouse & rustic | Cream, burlap, buffalo check, natural wood | White or cream walls, shiplap, wood furniture | Warm white |
| Elegant gold & white | White, gold, champagne | Light, neutral rooms | Warm white |
| Blue, silver & flocked | Blue, silver, navy, white | White, gray or coastal rooms | Cool white |
| Pink & pastel | Blush, pink, soft pastels, gold accents | Soft neutrals, bedrooms, nurseries | Warm white |
| Modern & boho | Neutrals, earth tones, natural textures | Minimalist or earthy rooms | Warm white |
| Colorful & kid-friendly | Rainbow, bright colors, favorite characters | Playrooms and kids’ bedrooms | Multicolor |

Small & Mini Christmas Tree Themes for Apartments and Small Spaces
Short on floor space? Any theme above can work on a tabletop tree, especially one under three feet tall.
Keep the look simple with one or two colors, choose smaller ornaments and ribbon, and use battery-operated fairy lights so you can place the tree on a console, sideboard or bookshelf without a cord in sight.
The rainbow mini tree (#27) and the slim pair of traditional trees (#4) are good places to start.
No room for even a mini tree? My DIY cone Christmas trees made from a Dollar Tree mop head take up almost no space and look great grouped together on a mantel or entryway table.
Budget-Friendly Christmas Tree Themes with DIY Ornaments & Thrift Store Finds
You don’t need a big budget to pull off a themed Christmas tree. A cohesive color scheme helps mismatched thrift store finds look like they belong together, and handmade ornaments add the personal touch.
Here are some of my favorite budget-friendly ways to build a theme:
- Browse my 75+ easy Dollar Tree Christmas crafts for ornaments, picks and tree trimmings.
- Paint plain ornaments to match your palette with painted Christmas ball ornaments.
- Try decoupage Christmas ornaments or pressed flower ornaments for a vintage or botanical look.
- Go natural with dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks and pine cones, which pair beautifully with farmhouse and woodland trees.
- Add handmade charm with wooden bead boho ornaments or gingerbread ornaments.
How to Decorate a Christmas Tree Step by Step
Whatever Christmas tree theme you choose, decorating in layers gives the best result.
Here are my Christmas tree decorating tips, in order:
- Fluff the tree. Shape each branch, working from the trunk outward, so the tree looks full before you add anything. If you have a real tree, let the branches settle first.
- Add the lights. A common rule of thumb is about 100 lights per vertical foot of tree, and up to 150 to 200 per foot for a fuller, brighter look. Test every strand before it goes on the tree. Save time by purchasing a pre-lit Christmas Tree, like this gorgeous King of Christmas pre-lit Flocked Tree with LED Lights.
- Layer in ribbon or garland. This is especially pretty on a flocked tree. Tuck wired ribbon into loops or cascade it from top to bottom, since wired ribbon holds its shape.
- Hang your statement ornaments first. Place your biggest or favorite ornaments deeper in the branches for depth, then fill in with the rest, mixing sizes, textures and finishes.
- Fill the gaps. Chenille stems, floral picks, dried orange slices and pom pom tassels are great for covering bare spots and adding texture.
- Add the tree topper. Match it to your theme and the scale of the tree, then secure it so it doesn’t lean.
- Finish with the tree skirt. Coordinate the skirt or collar with your colors for a pulled-together look.
Pet-Safe & Kid-Friendly Christmas Tree Decorating Ideas
A beautiful tree is even better when it’s safe for the little ones (and furry ones) in your house. Any theme above can be adapted with a few smart swaps.
Pet-Safe Tree Tips
- Skip the tinsel. The ASPCA warns that even a small amount can cause serious problems for cats and dogs.
- Keep ornaments and lights out of paws’ reach, and hang breakable ornaments higher up. Broken pieces can hurt a pet’s mouth and digestive tract.
- Anchor the tree so it can’t tip, and cover the water dish if you have a live tree.
Read the ASPCA’s full holiday safety tips for more.
For toddlers and nurseries, choose soft ornaments like felt, wood or fabric on the lower branches and save glass and other fragile ornaments for the top of the tree.
Kid-favorite themes like the Grinch, rainbow and candy cane trees are easy to build with sturdy, shatter-resistant decor. Dried orange slices and other natural decor look lovely, but hang them higher up if you have pets.
Christmas Tree Themes FAQ
What are the most popular Christmas tree themes?
Classic red, green and gold is still the most familiar Christmas tree theme, but silver, blue and blush palettes have become popular too. Farmhouse, flocked, chinoiserie (blue and white) and colorful modern trees are also favorites, and movie themes like the Grinch and Star Wars are a big hit with kids. Browse all 45+ Christmas tree themes above to find your style.
How do I choose a Christmas tree theme?
Start with the colors already in your room and the ornaments you love most. Pick two or three main colors plus a metallic or neutral, then choose ribbon and lights to match. If you’re torn, go with the style that fits your home, whether that’s farmhouse, modern or traditional, and build from there. The Christmas tree color theme chart near the top of this post makes matching easy.
How many colors should a Christmas tree theme have?
Two or three main colors plus a metallic or neutral is an easy formula that keeps a themed tree cohesive. Repeat the same colors in your ribbon, ornaments and tree skirt so the look feels intentional. For variety, mix textures and finishes (matte, glitter, wood, fabric) instead of adding more colors.
What is the best Christmas tree theme for a small living room or apartment?
A slim or tabletop tree with a simple two-color theme works best in small spaces. Choose smaller ornaments, ribbon and battery-operated fairy lights so the tree doesn’t feel crowded. If you’re really tight on space, try my DIY cone Christmas trees.
What is the easiest way to decorate a Christmas tree?
Work in layers. Fluff the branches, add lights, weave in ribbon or garland, hang your biggest ornaments first, and then fill in with smaller ornaments, floral picks or pom poms. Finish with the topper and tree skirt. See the full step-by-step Christmas tree decorating guide above.
What is the Christmas tree rule?
There isn’t one official rule, but the most common rule of thumb is about 100 lights per vertical foot of tree, or roughly 600 lights for a six-foot tree. For a fuller, brighter look you can go up to 150 to 200 lights per foot. Many decorators also stick to two or three main colors so the tree feels cohesive.
Should I use warm white or cool white lights?
Warm white lights give a cozy, traditional glow that suits red and green, gold, farmhouse and blush trees. Cool white lights look crisp and icy, which is gorgeous with blue, silver and flocked trees. Whichever you choose, use the same tone throughout the tree so the strands match.
How can I decorate a themed Christmas tree on a budget?
Mix DIY ornaments with thrift store and dollar store finds, which is exactly how I do it. A cohesive color scheme helps mismatched pieces look like they belong together. Check out my Dollar Tree Christmas crafts and hand painted Christmas ornaments for easy ideas.
What are good Christmas tree themes for kids?
Movie and character trees are the big hits, including the Grinch, Star Wars, Marvel, Disney and Nightmare Before Christmas. Rainbow, candy cane and polar bear and owl trees are fun for younger kids too. For little ones, choose soft or shatter-resistant ornaments and hang anything fragile higher up. See all the movie and kids’ Christmas tree themes above.
How do I make a Christmas tree pet-safe?
Skip the tinsel, secure the tree so it can’t tip, and keep ornaments, lights and wires out of paws’ reach. Broken ornaments can hurt a pet’s mouth and digestive tract, so hang breakable ones high and use sturdier or softer ornaments low. If you have a live tree, cover the water dish. The ASPCA shares more in its holiday safety tips.
How do I decorate a flocked Christmas tree?
A flocked tree is a white canvas, so color really pops. Blue and silver, navy and white, blush and gold, and pastels all look beautiful. Layer wide ribbon, vary your ornament sizes, and choose warm or cool lights to match your theme. See my blue flocked Christmas tree and blue and silver flocked tree for inspiration.
How should I store themed Christmas tree decorations?
Wrap fragile ornaments individually and store them in dividers or sturdy bins. Label each box by theme or color so setup is quick next year. Keep ribbon wound on cardboard or in a bag so it doesn’t tangle, and store everything somewhere cool and dry.
