Dollar Tree Christmas DIY

If you follow me on Facebook, you know I love a good Dollar Tree craft. Combine that with a Christmas craft and I’m a happy camper!

The moment I spotted this gold ornate frame at Dollar Tree I knew it would be perfect for a decoupage project.

But, the gold was a little too shiny for my taste, so I gave it a vintage-inspired makeover.

Here are a few free Christmas images if you want to use a different Santa for your frame.

Now, let’s get to all the details so you can make your own.

Supplies for Vintage Santa Frame

Step 1. Soften the gold

I wasn’t really sure where I was going when I started updating this frame. That is actually the fun of creating.

I started by adding metallic lustre wax. This didn’t get the effect that I was looking for, so I went with plan b.

A bit of black acrylic paint dry-brushed over the raised details of the frame toned down the gold.

Step 2. Add Cinnamon

You read that right…cinnamon. I’ve used this before to add a vintage effect as detailed in this vintage wall pocket tutorial.

Add a bit of mod podge to the frame then sprinkle the cinnamon on top of it. You can use a brush to press it into the details. This is such a cool technique.

Step 3. Add background image

Once you are happy with the detail of the frame, it’s time to add your image. I went with a script style cardstock from the craft store.

Trim it to size and secure it to the black cardboard backing with mod podge. Smooth out any wrinkles.

Step 4. Trim the Santa

Trim the Santa image to fit the center of the frame. Secure with mod podge and smooth any wrinkles.

Step 5. Add Glitter

To give a bit of sparkle to the cute Santa, I added mod podge to the beard and used glamour dust. Everything is better with a little sparkle!

Step 6. Attach Christmas Banner

To add a little more detail to the base of the frame, I chose to attach a festive holiday greeting. Simply print the greeting of your choice and trim it to size.

I used a distressing ink to give the banner a bit of detailing. Hot glue the banner to the bottom of the frame.

There you have it! A beautiful vintage-inspired frame perfect for adding nostalgic cheer to your home!
