Tips for Pricing Crafts To Sell

It’s been several years since I’ve sold crafts at a craft fair or church bazaar, but I do visit them often especially in the fall and Christmas season. Also, as an avid thrifter I am always on the hunt for budget-friendly finds!

Another thing that may be helpful for you is to join local Facebook crafting or buy/sell groups groups that talk about making and selling crafts. The question that I see asked most often is how to price the items you are selling.

Here are some helpful tips:

  • Materials + Labor = Production Cost: Add up all your materials and include a reasonable hourly rate for the time it took to make your item.
  • Materials + $10/hour: A simple method is to add a flat rate for your time to the cost of materials.
  • Production Cost × 2 = Wholesale Price; Wholesale Price × 2 = Retail Price: This is a common approach that helps cover costs and ensures a profit at both wholesale and retail levels.
  • Materials × 3: Some sellers start with the cost of materials and multiply by three, adjusting as needed for labor and desired profit.
  • Offer a 2-for price: Encourage sales by letting customers buy two items at a slightly discounted rate, which can boost volume while still maintaining profit.

Other important factors to consider:

  • Check out the market: Look at what similar items are selling for, but don’t just copy their prices.
  • Value your work: Your time and skill matter and it’s important that your pricing reflects that. Undervaluing can make your products seem lower quality.
  • Adjust for your goals: Use these as guidelines. Smaller profits might be fine if you’re building an audience, but if you rely on crafting for income, price accordingly.
  • Think about perceived value: Great photos, professional branding, and a compelling story can help customers see your product as worth more.
  • Include all costs: Don’t forget materials, labor, and extra expenses like website fees, packaging, or craft fair booth costs.
